As put in the online conference by M. Schelske and Jones, it is key to improve global input/output data availability to improve businesses dependencies and impact on biodiversity assessment.

Thanks to the ENCORE tool some important progress has been recently made to asses businesses dependencies on ecosystems services.

But stakeholders face challenges in better assessing impact of businesses and their footprint when it comes to assess where they buy their inputs and what are the impact of the products they sells (The scope 3 assessment in the nomenclature used for Businesses climate footprint assessment)

One of the major resource today to do such kind of assessment is the Exiobase database. It was developed by harmonizing and detailing supply-use tables for a large number of countries, estimating emissions and resource extractions by industry.

Exiobase provide global input/output data for about 44 / 45 countries only and with most of developing countries (where a lot of biodiversity issues / impact are at risk) are gathered in only 4/5 "Rest of the world group” lowering impact and dependencies assessment in some key biodiversity areas.

Whatever the different types of impacts and dependences of various types of businesses on biodiversity, it is absolutely necessary to improve emissions and resource extractions data to be able to provide “proxy assessment” at an affordable prices for businesses and decision makers.
