465 Fri, 19/08/2022 bcurley1012 The Artwork of Julie Sperling, Canadian Mosaic Artist and Environment Policy Analyst, is an Emotional Response to Key IPBES Assessment Findings and is a Call to Action for Transformative Change English (396) In a blog post Julie Sperling, Canadian mosaic artist and policy analyst with Environment and Climate Change Canada, cites key findings from IPBES Global Assessment, and makes personal and intimate the loss of global biodiversity through her art. Her loon explosion, titled ”In The Red”, showcasing the quintessentially Canadian loon, is meant to echo the idea of “annihilation”. The title is a nod to the International Union for Concerned Scientists’ "Red List" of Threatened Species, while the loon is hemmed in by concrete, which is an allusion to the rampant habitat destruction that’s fueling the current biological annihilation. Her art is a call to action: "So look into that loon’s eyes, harness the uneasiness, sadness, loss, guilt, rage, or whatever else you might feel, and channel it. I’ll be right there with you, fighting for our existence". 301 Fri, 17/11/2023 Anonymous IPBES Selected as 2020 WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award Winner English (396) The WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award announced on 22 May 2020, the International Day for Biological Diversity, that IPBES was selected as the recipient of its 2020 award, focused on the theme biodiversity, which also includes a prize of one million Swedish Kronor. IPBES was recognized specifically for the Global Assessment and the platform's "decisive role in outlining the drivers of biodiversity loss, communicating the magnitude of the problem and laying the groundwork for a new agenda and transformative change in relation to biodiversity."

"IPBES has had a decisive role in outlining the drivers of biodiversity loss, communicating the magnitude of the problem and laying the groundwork for a new agenda and transformative change in relation to biodiversity. Through their methodology, which includes research in both natural and social science as well as including the importance of indigenous peoples’ knowledge and experience, they have increased the opportunities for evidence-based decision making by policymakers.

Since its inception in 2012, by engaging and uniting the world’s nations around the issue of biodiversity, IPBES has played a crucial role in setting the groundwork for the change we need to address this crisis in the near future."

197 Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous Citing IPBES Global Assessment Key Findings, United States Representative Deb Haaland (D-NM) Introduces '30 By 30 Resolution to Save Nature' English (396) U.S. Representative Deb Haaland (NM-01), joined Reps. Joe Neguse (Colo.-02), Ted Lieu (Calif.-33), Ruben Gallego (Ariz.-07), and Ed Case (Hawaii-01) to introduce the Thirty by Thirty Resolution to Save Nature to set a goal for the United States to conserve at least 30% of the ocean and land by 2030.

In a press conference, Rep. Haaland said, “Globally, the loss of nature – accelerated by climate change – is putting up to one million species on the path to extinction. Conserving our lands and waters is essential to protecting humans and wildlife and stabilizing our climate, so I’m following the direction from leading scientists and introducing this resolution to set a national goal of conserving 30 percent of America’s land and oceans by 2030 to tackle this urgent crisis.”

The legislation is a companion bill to S. Res. 372 introduced by Senators Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Michael Bennett (D-Colo.) in October 2019.

Namely, the findings that 1 million species face extinction, the direct drivers of biodiversity loss and five specific facts were incorporated in the bill to justify this proposal: ((A) human activities are damaging 2⁄3 of ocean areas; (B) only 3 percent of ocean areas remain pristine; (C) 15 percent of mangroves remain; (D) 50 percent of coral reefs remain; and (E) at the current rate of losses, less than 10 percent of the Earth will be free of substantial human impact by 2050);.
