Researchers Use IPBES Approach to Conduct Quantitative Literature Review English (396) Researchers undertook a quantitative assessment of the genetic properties of small and isolated populations considered to fall into the “insular” category. The 2019 IPBES Global Assessment emphasized the importance of formal consideration of ecosystems considered to be “insular” due to their inherent vulnerability. These insular populations are expected to suffer from lower levels of genetic diversity, particularly when they are small, and scientists undertaking this research intended to find this out.

The researchers concluded that “insularity had relatively minor effects on genetic diversity within and among populations, which points to the more important role of other factors in shaping evolutionary processes…insularity influenced genetic diversity in a study system when genetic diversity was high even in non-insular populations of the same study system—suggesting an important role for the scope’ of influences on genetic diversity.”

 Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous Microsoft Cites IPBES Global Assessment in Announcement of Funding for Shazam4Nature English (396) In an article announcing that Microsoft will fund the Shazam4Nature project, created at the EarthLab by Microsoft Berlin and Fraunhofer CeRRI, Microsoft cites key findings from the IPBES Global Assessment. According to Microsoft, the IPBES findings show that “we need to act urgently”. Shazam4Nature is an “acoustic biodiversity monitoring system that captures and records animal sounds through sensitive microphones, and evaluates the acoustic signals using artificial intelligence (AI) in the Azure cloud”. The project is a part of Microsoft’s AI for Earth program.

 Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous New Study on Monitoring Global Forests Draws on IPBES Global Assessment English (396) Researchers from the Universitat de Leida in Spain have created a network of plots, ranging from Moncayo to Northern Sweden, where they automatically measure the growth of mixed forests. They are studying possible changes in the distribution of forest species. In an article outlining their work, the researchers highlight the finding from the IPBES Global Assessment that one million species are at risk of extinction due to human activity, which shows the importance of protecting biodiversity.

 Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous IPBES Global Assessment Prompts International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) to 'Rethink How We Work Together to Tackle the Biodiversity Crisis' English (396) The IPBES Global Assessment Report has influenced the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM)'s biodiversity lead write that "the key findings of the [IPBES] Report that show, in no uncertain terms, biodiversity is declining at rates unprecedented in human history. This rapid reduction of the world’s precious natural diversity is cause for great alarm, but as the report also states, it’s not too late for us to make a difference."

 Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous Major study draws on IPBES findings to analyze extinction rates in context of conservation and climate change English (396) A major study authored by 21 global biodiversity and climate scientist draws on IPBES findings to analyze the effects of land conservation and climate action on extinction rates in the tropics. The findings of the study show that “limiting climate change to 2°C and conserving 30% of terrestrial area could more than halve aggregate extinction risk compared with uncontrolled climate change and no increase in conserved area.” The findings were revealed at the first Davos Global Biodiversity Forum.

 Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous IPBES Global Assessment Cited in Decision to Create the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service in Chile Spanish (399) GEF Montaña Project cites findings of the IPBES Global Assessment as key motivation in the decision to create the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP), which will serve as a solution to prevent local species from disappearing. According to Jan José Donoso, head of the Natural Resources and Biodiversity Division of the Ministry of the Environment and director of the GEF Montaña Project, officials believe “that the creation of the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP) will be a solution to the lack of concrete actions and lack of responses in the country, since we will have a public service dedicated exclusively to the conservation and protection of ecosystems and species”. The GEF Montaña Project is a project run by the Environment Ministry of Chile and the Sendero de Chile Foundation, with support from the United Nations Environment Programme.
