 Mon, 04/04/2022 Anonymous At First Nobel Prize Summit EU President Ursula von der Leyen Says IPBES Work "Essential to Build Consensus Around Our Planet's State of Health" English (396) In a video recorded message on the occasion of the First Nobel Prize Summit, held virtually from 26 to 28 April 2021, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, outlined three reasons why, and three ways how, governments need to work with science. First, "we need science to make sense of the world around us. Second, we need science to guide us. And third, we need science to find new solutions to the challenges of our times, and to fuel innovation for a healthy planet."
On her second point the President pointed to Europe's close work with the three international panels that bring science to the table of policy-makers: IPCC for climate, IPBES for biodiversity and IRP for resources and the circular economy. "Their advice has been essential to build an international consensus around our planet's state of health. It is now time to find ways for these platforms to work better together. In a subsequently produced policy paper, Members acknowledge their recognition of the unprecedented and interdependent crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, and referenced recent assessments, including IPBES Assessment, which document that "rapid and far-reaching transformations across all sectors of society and the economy are necessary to tackle climate change, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss". English (396) This review builds on key findings of IPBES Assessment and has been elaborated to operationalize the concept of transformative governance. The article argues that transformative governance is needed to enable the transformative change necessary for achieving global sustainability goals. It must be: integrative, inclusive, adaptive, and pluralist. The article further argues that governance becomes transformative only when these four governance approaches are: implemented in conjunction; operationalized in a specific manner; and focused on addressing the indirect drivers underlying sustainability issues.

 Wed, 24/08/2022 Anonymous EUR 50 Million Nature for Health (N4H) Initiative on Preventing Pandemics Launched Based Partly on IPBES Report on Biodiversity and Pandemics English (396) Through an initial contribution of EUR 50 million from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) via Germany's International Climate Initiative (IKI), the Nature for Health (N4H) Initiative has been launched to prevent future pandemics by fostering locally developed and integrated approaches to secure the health of people, animals and the environment. The initiative was partly based on the findings of the IPBES Workshop Report on Biodiversity and Pandemics, and was mentioned by Minister Steffie Lemke at the opening ceremony of #IPBES9 in Bonn in July 2022.
