Methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its benefits, including biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services

At its sixth session (IPBES-6) in Medellin, Colombia in 2018, the IPBES Plenary approved the undertaking of a methodological assessment on values. The assessment report is scheduled to be presented for the Plenary’s acceptance, and its summary for policymakers for its approval, at the Plenary’s ninth session (IPBES 9) to be held in Bonn, Germany from 3 July to 9 July 2022.

Previous IPBES work on values included:

At its second session (IPBES 2) in Antalya, Turkey in 2013, the IPBES Plenary approved the initiation of scoping for a methodological assessment on the conceptualization of values of biodiversity and nature’s benefits to people and the development of a preliminary guide, for consideration by the Plenary at IPBES 3.

At IPBES 3, in Bonn, Germany in 2015, the Plenary requested the expert group established for scoping the methodological assessment and developing a preliminary guide, to revise the scoping report for the methodological assessment based on comments received following an open review by Governments and stakeholders, for consideration by the Plenary at its fourth session.

At IPBES 4, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016 the Plenary welcomed the preliminary guide on the conceptualization of values of biodiversity and nature’s benefits to people (contained in document IPBES/4/INF/13) and approved the scoping report on the methodological assessment regarding diverse conceptualization of values of nature and its benefits, including biodiversity and ecosystem services.

In the same decision, the Plenary requested the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel to nominate a set of experts to ensure, in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, that values and valuation were incorporated appropriately into all IPBES deliverables.

 

At its ninth session, the Plenary will be invited to approve the summary for policymakers. It will also be invited to accept the chapters of the report and their executive summaries, which will be revised after the ninth session to ensure consistency with the summary for policymakers as approved.
