The terms of reference of the task force on knowledge and data assign to the task force the responsibility to support the Bureau and the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel in reviewing the knowledge needs and gaps identified through IPBES scoping processes and assessments and to catalyse the generation of new knowledge and data and to support the Bureau and the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel in convening dialogues with scientific organizations, policymakers and funding organizations and in undertaking other activities to address those needs identified in the work programme (decision IPBES-2/5, section II).

Under the guidance of the Bureau and the Panel, the task force on knowledge and data has, since the fourth session of the Plenary, developed a process for catalysing the generation of new knowledge, containing three steps:

  1. the identification of gaps in knowledge, information and data in the IPBES work programme, and in completed assessments;
  2. consultation on these gaps and the formulation of priority areas for knowledge generation with policy-makers/users and the scientific community;
  3. Publication and transmission to institutions funding/catalyzing research and access to or generation of new datasets, and organization of bilateral meetings with these institutions, as appropriate.

Currently, the approach is being piloted for the completed assessment of pollination, pollinators and food production.

Work for the intersessional period 2017/18 includes the following activities and milestones

Piloting of the process for catalysing the generation of new knowledge
