Article from Online Science Journal 'One Earth' Uses IPBES Global Assessment to Outline Framework to Evaluate Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)

English (396)
Guided by the IPBES Assessment, this science article provides a framework to evaluate how Nature-based solutions NbS contribute to transformative change and apply it to 93 NbS from mountain social-ecological systems (SES). The framework serves to assess what elements may catalyze transformative change, how transformative change occurs, and what its outcomes are. The framework provides key components for assessing the effectiveness of NbS and allows tracking long-term transformative change processes.

Paper Cites IPBES in Case Study Seeking to Identify Link Between Potential Futures and the Values Underpinning Them in Protected Land Areas in Czechia

English (396)
Drawing on IPBES Methodological Assessment Report's "future thinking", an approach helping people to understand and tackle complex sustainability, this study aims to address the gap between understanding the scope of the root causes of human decisions and actions, and the link between anthropogenic drivers and their potential future impacts on nature in local regions. Through the design and implementation of a local-scale participatory value-based scenario building process, this study explores the relationships between (1) multiple types of values, (2) actions taken by different types of stakeholders, and (3) their potential impacts on nature, nature’s contributions to people (including ecosystem services) and good quality of life. This paper summarizes the results and lessons learnt from an array of value-based participatory scenario-building processes in the context of Protected Land Areas in a Czechia, in Central Europe, and reflects on the utility of value-based participatory scenario planning as a means to strengthen sustainable governance.

The Artwork of Julie Sperling, Canadian Mosaic Artist and Environment Policy Analyst, is an Emotional Response to Key IPBES Assessment Findings and is a Call to Action for Transformative Change

English (396)
In a blog post Julie Sperling, Canadian mosaic artist and policy analyst with Environment and Climate Change Canada, cites key findings from IPBES Global Assessment, and makes personal and intimate the loss of global biodiversity through her art. Her loon explosion, titled ”In The Red”, showcasing the quintessentially Canadian loon, is meant to echo the idea of “annihilation”. The title is a nod to the International Union for Concerned Scientists’ "Red List" of Threatened Species, while the loon is hemmed in by concrete, which is an allusion to the rampant habitat destruction that’s fueling the current biological annihilation. Her art is a call to action: "So look into that loon’s eyes, harness the uneasiness, sadness, loss, guilt, rage, or whatever else you might feel, and channel it. I’ll be right there with you, fighting for our existence".

A Multi-Author Policy Perspective Paper Draws on IPBES Assessment Findings to Recommend Action in Priority Areas in Post-2020 Agenda

At First Nobel Prize Summit EU President Ursula von der Leyen Says IPBES Work "Essential to Build Consensus Around Our Planet's State of Health"

English (396)
In a video recorded message on the occasion of the First Nobel Prize Summit, held virtually from 26 to 28 April 2021, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, outlined three reasons why, and three ways how, governments need to work with science. First, "we need science to make sense of the world around us. Second, we need science to guide us. And third, we need science to find new solutions to the challenges of our times, and to fuel innovation for a healthy planet."
On her second point the President pointed to Europe's close work with the three international panels that bring science to the table of policy-makers: IPCC for climate, IPBES for biodiversity and IRP for resources and the circular economy. "Their advice has been essential to build an international consensus around our planet's state of health. It is now time to find ways for these platforms to work better together. Because everything is connected. One health, one planet, one humanity. So we must also join up our work on climate, on biodiversity and on circularity. For a more effective multilateralism, guided by science."

Viet Nam's National Ecosystem Assessment Report 2021 Builds on IPBES Global Assessments

Vietnamese (523)
Building on the global assessments undertaken by IPBES, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam produced it's first-ever National Ecosystem Assessment, which it began developing in 2018. At the report's launch, presenters gave a summary of the methodology and results of the national assessment, focusing on the accomplishments and results and how the findings may assist with decision-making. Experts emphasized the critical importance of protecting vulnerable habitats, as well as the urgent need to integrate biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection across all economic and social development policies to ensure a sustainable future for the country.

The report provides useful references for strengthening public awareness and legal frameworks to protect and restore ecosystems. The assessment helps connect scientists to practitioners and policymakers in the country and will play a critical role in informing policymaking. Assessment findings were used to generate national policies such as the National Strategy on Environment Protection (to 2030 and a vision to 2050) and the National Strategy on Biodiversity Conservation (2021–2030). They also contributed to Viet Nam’s sixth national report to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
