Following the Global Assessment, UN Experts Warn that Biodiversity Loss Seriously Threatens Human Rights

Description of Impact(s) (English Only) An independent group of UN experts warned that the loss of biodiversity, as well as the erosion of nature and the extinction of species, seriously threaten human rights for present and future generation. The experts referenced the findings of the Global Assessment to assert that environmental health underpins basic human rights and to highlight the urgency of biodiversity loss. They found that failing to protect biodiversity can constitute a violation of the right to a healthy environment, which is legally recognized by 155 States. They also cited IPBES while emphasizing the importance of respecting Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
