| Abstract | Some mechanism such as REDD+ or PSE have been developed to help communities and countries to protect theirs naturals resources but until know, Benin is still starter in these global conservation strategies. This project will help Benin to develop his own REDD plan. IPBES support program fit with the project and will be very helpful for our biodiversity protection. With total cost of 490,000 USD in three components, the project will last 3 years and will concern the 8 different agro ecological area of Benin. |
| Project Description | Climate change is nowadays known as a threat to poverty alleviation objectives and the millennium objectives for development. Forests are important ecosystems that can reduce worth effects of climate change thanks through carbon sequestration (UNFCCC, Kyoto-1997 to Doha, 2012). Some mechanism such as REDD+ or PSE have been developed to help communities to protect their natural’s resources. But, Benin didn't have his own REDD plan and even the list of greenhouse gases is still at the beginning. Consequently, Benin is still losing 50,000 ha of forests each year (FAO, 2010). This project which aim to promote Eco systemic services to reduce impacts of climate change due to greenhouse effects will help Benin to develop his REDD plan. IPBES support program is in excellent fit with the project and will be very helpful to better protect our forests and by so doing our biodiversity. If succeeded, this project can initiate a common conservation program at regional scale together with Niger, Togo and Burkina-Faso for integrated management of our regional parks. |
| Project Objectives and expected Achievables | Global objective: Promote eco systemic services for the mitigation of the harmful effects of climate change due to greenhouse effects Specific objectives : 1- Elaborate a strategy and work plan for forests eco systemic services 2- Assess the emission rate of greenhouse gases and needs in REDD+ in Benin 3- Characterize the different agro ecological areas more sensitive to greenhouse effect 4- Assess eco systemic services of three great forests in order to elaborate a tracing system Expected Acheivables 1- Existence of a national REDD+ training plan in Benin 2- Law reinforcement about eco systemic services 3- Existence of national tracing system of forests 4- List of greenhouse gases in different agro ecological areas in Benin 5- List of possible eco systemic services of Benin natural forests 6- Elaboration of national REDD+ tracing document 7- At least 5 REDD+/PSE projects are written and submitted for founding |
