 Tue, 12/12/2023 Fernando Neda Asset Management Company Mirova's Social Impact Strategy Influenced by IPBES Science English (396) Asset management company Mirova has pledged to focus on the social impacts of its land investments around the world through a sustainable land management-dedicated strategy. Mirova offers investment solutions that combine financial performance with environmental and social impact. The newly launched Mirova Sustainable Land Fund 2 (MSLF2) has the goal of raising €350 million (US$377.8 million) over a four-to-five year period from public bodies and institutional investors. It will invest in agroforestry, sustainable forestry, and regenerative agriculture projects in developing countries.

In its April 2023 report, "Mirova for Nature: Progress report on our roadmap in favour of biodiversity #2," the organization references science published in the IPBES Global Assessment (2019) and IPBES-IPCC Co-sponsored Workshop report, writing: "For Mirova, quick action by the financial sector is required well before regulations are enforced everywhere: divestment of impactful activities such as intensive agriculture & forestry, investment in nature-positive activities such as nature-based solutions and activities that reduce the five direct anthropogenic pressure drivers defined by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)– changes in land and sea use; direct exploitation of organisms; climate change; pollution; and invasion of alien species –, but also simulation of corporates impacts to support investment decisions in the absence of sufficient data and engagement with companies to direct their climate fundings towards land-use projects in the context of net-zero commitments."

"Evaluating positive impact also requires evaluation of the business-as-usual and sustainability scenario for each of the five pressure drivers on biodiversity defined by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)... Mirova leverages collaborative engagement to encourage companies in most material sectors to accelerate the transition towards deployment of processes and development of products that mitigate negative impacts in supply chain and improve positive impact based on reduced IPBES pressures of an activity as compared to a baseline," continued the organization.

"Mirova excludes activities that are most harmful to biodiversity. Globally a few activities have been identified as most harmful to biodiversity because they are the main root cause of the IPBES pressures drivers. Mirova has already
published its controversial activity list on the topic of climate change and intends to update it with new exclusions related to land use and pollution, including notably deforestation-linked agricultural commodities, chemicals and plastics," the entity pledged.  Wed, 13/12/2023 Fernando Neda US Senate Resolution Introduced that Highlights IPBES Science and Amplifies Call for National Biodiversity Strategy English (396) Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley introduced a non-binding resolution in the U.S. Senate to establish a National Biodiversity Strategy. The resolution would express the need for the United States to establish a national biodiversity
strategy to protect species biodiversity. Such a strategy would encourage federal agencies to identify and pursue a full range of actions within existing laws and policies while encouraging the consideration of new ones, as well as establish a new four-year assessment to monitor the progress in addressing the biodiversity crisis.

The resolution notes that "whereas the United States should play a leading role on the international stage in addressing the biodiversity crisis, yet the United States... (3) does not have a national biodiversity strategy as
part of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services."

The resolution references IPBES science published in the 2019 Global Assessment, stating that "whereas recent scientific studies have shown that human driven threats have harmed biodiversity by (1) threatening approximately 1,000,000 species with imminent or near extinction." It also makes references to scientific evidence on the decline of wild species, the need to control threats posed by invasive species, as well as drivers of biodiversity loss.

Over 120 organizations endorsed the resolution. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Peter Welch (D-VT), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) joined Senator Merkley in sponsoring the resolution.

 Sat, 29/04/2023 CMousnier IUCN Issues Guideline for Working with Indigenous & Local Knowledge (ILK) in IUCN Red List assessments Informed by IPBES Work on ILK English (396) IUCN have issued guidelines for working with Indigenous & Local Knowledge (ILK) in assessments of red list species. The document builds on discussions that have taken place over the last decade between the IUCN CEESP-SSC Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group and the IUCN SSC Red List Committee and draws on experience from the IPBES ILK Approach. Indeed the IPBES Global Assessment (GA) was the first global scale assessment to engage systematically with ILK. The document refers to IPBES' work which has influenced and informed this process by IUCN. Moreover, various IPBES experts and knowledge holders have contributed to this document, including Marla R. Emery, Flore Lafaye de Micheaux and Phil Lyver.

In other words, the work of IPBES has provided a framework and approach to engage with ILK and IPLCs in scientific assessments, and this has influenced the development of these guidelines for gathering and utilizing ILK in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Climate Q&A aims to make scientific reports on climate issues accessible. Moreover, the IPCC reports, but also those of the International Energy Agency, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) are among the documents integrated into the AI for its research.  Mon, 04/04/2022 Anonymous IPBES Publications Inform Handbook on the Use of Biodiversity Scenarios in Support of Decision-Making English (396) BiodivERsA and the Belmont Forum, in the framework of their joint action on scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services, have produced a handbook on the use of biodiversity scenarios in support of decision-making. This handbook is intended for any individual interested in learning about biodiversity scenarios, and in particular participatory scenario design and the use of biodiversity scenarios in decision-making. It builds on a variety of sources (literature, expert and non-expert consultations, interviews) to provide a general understanding of scenarios of biodiversity, concrete examples of their use and a directory of relevant resources to go further on the topic. Several publications of IPBES have been instrumental in this endeavor, in particular the IPBES Methodological Assessment on Scenarios and Models and its summary for policy-makers.  Mon, 27/11/2023 [email protected] French Foundation for Biodiversity (FRB) Assesses Capacity of 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy for Transformative Changes Based on IPBES Work English (396) The new IPBES work programme “assessment of transformative change” aims to identify factors in human society—behavioural, social, cultural dimensions, among others—that may be leveraged to bring about transformative change. In this context and based on its scientific recommendations, the third French National Strategy for Biodiversity for 2030 (SNB3), published in 2022, aims to contribute to the implementation of France’s international commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. We carried out a critical assessment of the capacity of the first version of SNB3 to initiate transformative change.
. Firstly, we describe a two-step assessment methodology for determining the leverage potential of the strategy’s measures, based on a robust and replicable independent scientific audit and a multi-criteria analysis.
. Secondly, we present the main results of the assessment using the SNB3 as a case example.
We confirm the scientific and practical relevance of this type of exercise for policy makers, for establishing strategies that are part of a transition process allowing for real transformative change in society. By analysing the measures and ranking them from most to least efficient, this study reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the strategy by anticipating what should have and may not have an impact, while highlighting what needs to be improved as a priority. The event brought together more than 30 participants from Kazakhstan, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, and Kenya representing science, policy and practice communities that BES-Net works closely with.  Wed, 22/11/2023 Amarys Preuss Irish Children and Youth's Assembly on Biodiversity Loss Presents its Key Messages and Calls to Action on Drivers of Biodiversity Loss Based on IPBES Global Assessment English (396) The first Children and Young People's Assembly on Biodiversity Loss was was convened between September and November 2022. 35 Irish children aged 7-17 were selected to explore, discuss and create calls to action on how to protect and restore biodiversity in Ireland.

The Assembly's work was organised under 5 Theme Groups, each specialised in a key driver of biodiversity loss as listed in the IPBES Global Assessment: habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, overexploitation and pollution. Across the five theme groups, Assembly members created over 100 calls to action, later consolidated into 6 key messages and 58 calls to action under a common vision: " an Ireland where we are connected to and care for the rights of nature (and each other) so that Biodiversity is restored and protected and we live and grow up in healthy, clean and fair environments."

 Wed, 22/11/2023 Amarys Preuss IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel Member Connects Science and Policy at Canadian Parliament English (396) IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) Member Dr. Catherine Febria, was a delegate in the 2023 edition of "Science Meets Parliament", an annual event in which scientists and national representatives engage in exchange and training sessions on the benefits of connecting decision-makers with experts.

Dr. Febria introduced the work of IPBES as a global science-policy interface and the role of the scientific community can play to support policy-makers.
