 Wed, 22/11/2023 Amarys Preuss Irish Children and Youth's Assembly on Biodiversity Loss Presents its Key Messages and Calls to Action on Drivers of Biodiversity Loss Based on IPBES Global Assessment English (396) The first Children and Young People's Assembly on Biodiversity Loss was was convened between September and November 2022. 35 Irish children aged 7-17 were selected to explore, discuss and create calls to action on how to protect and restore biodiversity in Ireland.

The Assembly's work was organised under 5 Theme Groups, each specialised in a key driver of biodiversity loss as listed in the IPBES Global Assessment: habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, overexploitation and pollution. Across the five theme groups, Assembly members created over 100 calls to action, later consolidated into 6 key messages and 58 calls to action under a common vision: " an Ireland where we are connected to and care for the rights of nature (and each other) so that Biodiversity is restored and protected and we live and grow up in healthy, clean and fair environments."

 Fri, 17/11/2023 Anonymous IPBES Selected as 2020 WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award Winner English (396) The WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award announced on 22 May 2020, the International Day for Biological Diversity, that IPBES was selected as the recipient of its 2020 award, focused on the theme biodiversity, which also includes a prize of one million Swedish Kronor. IPBES was recognized specifically for the Global Assessment and the platform's "decisive role in outlining the drivers of biodiversity loss, communicating the magnitude of the problem and laying the groundwork for a new agenda and transformative change in relation to biodiversity."

 Thu, 30/11/2023 Fernando Neda IPBES Science at Heart of Guardian Newspaper's Initiative to Include Biodiversity Amongst its Editorial Priorities English (396) The influential UK-based Guardian newspaper updated its editorial climate pledge to include nature and biodiversity. For this major editorial revision, and intending to ensure that biodiversity is also placed at the heart of their work in the way that climate was a few years back, the publication launched a large news feature. The reports focuses on what the world might look like in 2050 if we do not take the necessary action on biodiversity.

The article concentrates on the five main drivers of biodiversity loss identified by IPBES: land and sea use change, direct exploitation of natural resources, climate change, pollution and invasive species. As such, The Guardian requested perspectives from IPBES experts from different backgrounds, geographies and genders.

IPBES science, particularly from the 2019 Global Assessment and the 2023 Invasive Alien Species Assessment, was not only cited in the article, but it led Guardian to commission it, marking the newspaper's commitment to including biodiversity and related issues amongst its editorial priorities.

 Mon, 27/11/2023 Fernando Neda IPBES Science 'Instrumental' in Development of UNESCO Guidance for African Biosphere Reserves English (396) IPBES has been "instrumental" in the development of a new manual for decision-makers, managers and stakeholders of African biosphere reserves, and beyond, according to António Abreu, Director of UNESCO's Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences. "Filling a gap in the Man and the Biosphere community and beyond, [the] manual [provides] its readers with the necessary tools and knowledge to engage their communities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals," states the publication.

Funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, "Guidance for the assessment of ecosystem services in African Biosphere Reserves: a way forward to sustainable development," was developed based on a cooperation between UNESCO and the Capacities for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (CEBIOS) programme of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Science. "For the first time, a specific, user-friendly manual dedicated to assess ecosystem services was created for biosphere reserve managers and decision-makers, and adapted to the African biosphere reserve context."

Building on several IPBES reports, as well as its Conceptual Framework, the manual highlights how the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment underlines "the need for improved understanding of the interactions between ecosystem services and the goals and targets to end poverty and hunger and to enhance people’s well-being."

 Wed, 28/09/2022 Fernando Neda IPBES Results and Methodology Underpin Workshop on Identifying Information Gaps for ACTO Amazon Regional Assessment English (396) The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is an intergovernmental organization formed by the eight Amazonian countries. Throughout 2022, ACTO is carrying out a rapid assessment, delving deeper into the results for the Amazon region of the IPBES Global and Regional (Americas) Assessments on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. The assessment follows the IPBES conceptual and methodological framework.

A scientific workshop was held on "Identifying gaps on the state of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Amazon Region." This technical meeting, which took place on 24 January 2022, brought together more than 100 researchers, including Maria Helena Zaccagnini and Jake Rice, co-chairs of the IPBES Regional Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for the Americas.  Mon, 04/04/2022 Anonymous IPBES Publications Inform Handbook on the Use of Biodiversity Scenarios in Support of Decision-Making English (396) BiodivERsA and the Belmont Forum, in the framework of their joint action on scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services, have produced a handbook on the use of biodiversity scenarios in support of decision-making. This handbook is intended for any individual interested in learning about biodiversity scenarios, and in particular participatory scenario design and the use of biodiversity scenarios in decision-making. It builds on a variety of sources (literature, expert and non-expert consultations, interviews) to provide a general understanding of scenarios of biodiversity, concrete examples of their use and a directory of relevant resources to go further on the topic. Several publications of IPBES have been instrumental in this endeavor, in particular the IPBES Methodological Assessment on Scenarios and Models and its summary for policy-makers. Furthermore, valuable feedback wasgiven by members of the IPBES Task-Force on Scenarios and Models (among other academic and non-academic respondents) through an online consultation organized in the Spring of 2020.  Mon, 06/02/2023 Fernando Neda IPBES Nature Futures Framework Approach Used in Swedish Project Proposal to Integrate Nature in Urban Areas English (396) Researchers at the Stockholm Resilience Centre have presented ways to help city planners identify options for integrating nature within urban areas. Published in the May 2022 edition of Environmental Science & Policy, the framework led by researchers Jan Kuiper and Thomas Elmqvist responds to the development of new scenarios under the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services that focus on positive perspectives on how people and nature can prosper together. These perspectives formed the basis for the Nature Futures Framework (NFF).

Given that the NFF is not primarily looking at urban contexts, to fill this gap, the researchers colleagues developed the Urban Nature Futures Framework (UNFF) which presents three approaches to integrating nature in cities: (1) Nature for Nature Future: natural areas and biodiversity are at the core of any urban development, (2) Nature for Society Future: human needs form the basis for what ecosystem services should be prioritised, and (3) Nature as Culture Futures: how nature can help create stronger social communities, a sense of place and stewardship of nature.  Tue, 18/10/2022 Fernando Neda IPBES Global Assessment Inspires Poetry Project Raising Awareness about Biodiversity Loss English (396) Stating he wants to use his work "to encourage people to create a sanctuary for life on earth,” poet Anthony E. Lovell founded The One Million Poetry project, taking inspiration from the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Through poetry and visual art, the project aims to raise awareness of the one million species at risk of extinction and tap "into the emotional power of poetry to touch people’s hearts and encourage them to take action whilst there is still time."

Lovell "founded The One Million Poetry Project in collaboration with Ingrid Lung of The Earth Agency in response to the 2019 IPBES report that identified up to 1,000,000 species were at risk of extinction from human activity. The project seeks to collaborate with other artists, conservation organisations and corporations in support of sharing the earth with all species, recognition of other species (Great Apes, Cetaceans, and Elephants to start with), and the promotion of a ‘Sanctuary Earth’ world view."
