 Mon, 20/02/2023 Fernando Neda Viet Nam's National Ecosystem Assessment Report 2021 Builds on IPBES Global Assessments Vietnamese (523) Building on the global assessments undertaken by IPBES, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam produced it's first-ever National Ecosystem Assessment, which it began developing in 2018. At the report's launch, presenters gave a summary of the methodology and results of the national assessment, focusing on the accomplishments and results and how the findings may assist with decision-making. Experts emphasized the critical importance of protecting vulnerable habitats, as well as the urgent need to integrate biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection across all economic and social development policies to ensure a sustainable future for the country.

The report provides useful references for strengthening public awareness and legal frameworks to protect and restore ecosystems. The assessment helps connect scientists to practitioners and policymakers in the country and will play a critical role in informing policymaking. Assessment findings were used to generate national policies such as the National Strategy on Environment Protection (to 2030 and a vision to 2050) and the National Strategy on Biodiversity Conservation (2021–2030). They also contributed to Viet Nam’s sixth national report to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.  Mon, 10/10/2022 Anonymous IPBES Framework Applied in Participatory Assessment of Nature, People and Sustainability on Mount Kilimanjaro English (396) A new research study reports on findings from a first attempt at using the IPBES framework as a structured instrument for gathering stakeholder opinions during a participatory evaluation of nature, humans, and sustainability on Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. This assessment was organized in the form of a participatory three-day workshop with five different groups of stakeholders – community members, resource users, conservationists, researchers, and ‘other’ (mostly tourism operators). The IPBES framework enabled the effective collection and comparison of nuanced information from a diverse group of participants

Using the IPBES framework, researchers assembled information on the state of and trends in species diversity, Nature's Contributions to People (NCP), and on the main drivers of changes in species and habitats. Additionally, researchers gathered perspectives on the needs and opportunities for the sustainable management and conservation of natural resources from the individual to the international level.

Most respondents noted decreases in the majority of Kilimanjaro's ecosystems and species as well as in nature's capacity to provide services essential to human well-being, like as food, water, and livelihoods. They also anticipated that these decreases would persist. The majority of participants concurred that land-use change was a significant factor behind these decreases. Participants identified greater education and awareness as crucial steps to reversing these trends in order to prevent a deterioration in Nature and its capacity to promote human welfare.  Tue, 18/10/2022 Anonymous Irish National Children and Young People's Assembly on Biodiversity Loss Uses Global Assessment to Focus Thematic Discussions English (396) Ireland's first-ever national Childen and Young People's Assembly on Biodiversity Loss has been taking place for some of the country's youngest citizens to talk about how to better protect and restore biodiversity in Ireland. Aged 7-17, the children and young people are meeting in two weekend workshops to participate in biodiversity-themed discussions, nature trails and problem-solving brainstorming sessions.

Although focused on national issues of nature loss, organiser Diarmuid Torney said: "The work of IPBES has informed our planning for the assembly in important ways.  Wed, 19/10/2022 Fernando Neda Researchers Use IPBES Framework To Help Identify Key Relationships Between Nature and Well-being in New Zealand English (396) Researchers in New Zealand have published a new study exploring the relationship between natural capital and well-being in the country. The scientists used the IPBES classification to describe the contributions coming from “natural capital,” including material, non-material, and regulating ecosystem services or nature’s contributions to people (ES/NCP).

Goal B of the initial draft of the Convention on Biological Diversity's post-2020 global biodiversity framework acknowledged that "Nature and its contributions to humans are properly accounted for and guide all relevant public and private actions." The researchers call their method "a step forward" in helping analyze the most important factors affecting the link between nature and human well-being, improving narratives about the challenges and opportunities for change for these international commitments, as well as providing a foundation for tracking progress.

The procedure was evaluated utilizing three ES/NCP, one from each major IPBES category of material, regulating, and non-material, as well as two well-being domains (subjective well-being and health status) with varying degrees of objectivity. The research concludes that "that regulating ES/NCP contributed to the six broader categories of well-being, with non-material ES/NCP contributing to health, social relations, material well-being, and environmental quality categories."  Mon, 06/02/2023 Fernando Neda 50 Members of US Congress and 350 State Lawmakers Cite IPBES Findings in Letter to President Biden Advocating for a National Biodiversity Strategy English (396) 50 congressmen and congresswomen of the United States House of Representatives and 350 state lawmakers from around the U.S. sent a letter to President Joe Biden encouraging the establishment of a National Biodiversity Strategy "to protect and restore nature and secure [the United States'] rich biodiversity for generations to come". Citing the Summary for Policymakers of the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment Report, the lawmakers wrote: "The global scientific consensus is that as many as one million species are at risk of extinction. Studies have shown that we are losing species and their habitats faster than ever before."

"Only through a strategic and comprehensive approach can the U.S. government help to meet the scope and scale of the biodiversity crisis and help lead the world in protecting and beginning to restore nature over the coming decade," the representatives continued.

Lawmakers urged the President to set a strategy which, as laid out in a bipartisan House Resolution, directs "federal agencies to pursue actions within existing laws and policies and identify where new ones may need to be developed to protect biodiversity," as well as addresses the "five drivers of biodiversity loss, secure and restore critical ecosystem services, promote social equity and environmental justice, and coordinate a strong national response to tackling the biodiversity crisis both at home and abroad."

 Sat, 29/04/2023 Fernando Neda Protocol Developed to Operationalize IPBES Nature Futures Framework (NFF) by Combining it with Multi-Objective Optimization English (396) Through a case study of a rural landscape in northeastern Japan, researchers have developed a protocol with three specifications for operationalizing the IPBES Nature Futures Framework (NFF) in a landscape scenario analysis using a multi-objective optimization framework composed of: (1) exploring nature-positive futures, (2) seeking alternative pathways for targets satisfying visions of plural values, and (3) screening key direct drivers to achieve the targets.

This study modeled the NFF-based scenarios by applying the concept of multi-objective optimization and a landscape change model to explore desirable futures, seek targets in the NFF state space, and screen response options for reaching these targets in the Bekambeushi River watershed in northeastern Japan.

The protocol identified multiple, but few nature-positive and Pareto optimal strategies that satisfied NFF visions; nature-positive, but not Pareto optimal strategies; and non-nature-positive strategies. The protocol also identified key response options to achieve three different NFF value perspectives in the case study area: (1) clear or selective cutting in forestry and (2) solar PV installation on abandoned pastureland in agriculture and energy sectors.  Sat, 29/04/2023 Fernando Neda Land Degradation Knowledge from IPBES Applied in New Study on Degraded Landscapes in Tanzania English (396) Researchers conducted a study using the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) definition of rangeland degradation as "persistent loss of vegetation productivity cover, especially of those plants which support herbivores."

The scientists aimed to identify whether degradation results from a loss of resistance to environmental shocks, or loss of recovery, in an area consisting of 30,300 km2 of the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem and Maasai Steppe of northern Tanzania.

Quoting IPBES, researchers stated that "rangeland degradation has been defined as a long-term decline in productivity resulting in rangelands unsuitable for grazing (IPBES19), rather than short-term declines driven by temporal variability of environmental conditions (e.g. rainfall, grazing pressure)."

Researchers found "locations that ended up the most degraded tended to decline in condition more during years of widespread degradation but maintained their recovery potential. These results suggest that resilience in rangelands is lost through declines in resistance, rather than loss of recovery potential."  Mon, 27/11/2023 [email protected] French Foundation for Biodiversity (FRB) Assesses Capacity of 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy for Transformative Changes Based on IPBES Work English (396) The new IPBES work programme “assessment of transformative change” aims to identify factors in human society—behavioural, social, cultural dimensions, among others—that may be leveraged to bring about transformative change. In this context and based on its scientific recommendations, the third French National Strategy for Biodiversity for 2030 (SNB3), published in 2022, aims to contribute to the implementation of France’s international commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. We carried out a critical assessment of the capacity of the first version of SNB3 to initiate transformative change.
. Firstly, we describe a two-step assessment methodology for determining the leverage potential of the strategy’s measures, based on a robust and replicable independent scientific audit and a multi-criteria analysis.
. Secondly, we present the main results of the assessment using the SNB3 as a case example.
We confirm the scientific and practical relevance of this type of exercise for policy makers, for establishing strategies that are part of a transition process allowing for real transformative change in society. By analysing the measures and ranking them from most to least efficient, this study reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the strategy by anticipating what should have and may not have an impact, while highlighting what needs to be improved as a priority.  Fri, 17/11/2023 Qihan-Huang Motivated by IPBES Global Assessment, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Signs the Petition for Global Deal for Nature English (396) In response to the release of the IPBES 2019 Global Assessment Report, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), has signed the Petition for Global Deal for Nature (GDN) which is calling on the world leaders to protect half of our lands and seas.
The Report by IPBES discloses the worrying current situation of our nature: species extinction, wildlife decline, habitat loss, and exhausted ecological resources. According to the petition, "these systems are being thrown dangerously off balance by an onslaught of human activities. From pesticides on our fields to plastics choking our oceans to bulldozers in our forests, all over the planet, the natural world is under assault."
Dr. Zhou Jinfeng said, “we must change our lifestyle and production mode in a radical way. We should abandon the values of changing and conquering the nature obtained in the industrial civilization and develop new values of respecting and conserving nature. It is essential to protect earth resources, biodiversity, and natural habitats, and take actions to maintain the balance of the ecosystem, thus achieving sustainable development and creating a community of shared future for mankind. This is the inexorable trend of civilization development." The foundation seeks to work together with others who share their commitment to biodiversity conservation and green development in addressing the global challenges highlighted in the assessment.
