 Wed, 06/12/2023 Fernando Neda In New Paper, Authors Point to IPBES Work as they Call for Integrated Policy Approaches and Solutions to Solve Climate and Biodiversity Crises Together German (435) In a new article published in the German journal Ecological Economy, authors Alexandra Dehnhardt and Josef Settele argue that so far, climate and biodiversity protection have largely been dealt with in separate political domains, and that both crises can only be solved together.

“Climate change and the biodiversity crisis can only be overcome together ,” emphasize Dehnhardt and Settele in their in-depth article. How can the two policy areas work better together? A first step was the joint workshop by the World Biodiversity Council IPBES and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC 2020. Both bodies believe a profound change is necessary - for example through development paths such as degrowth, green economy or nature protection.

The authors quote the IPBES Global Assessment (2019), the IPBES Values Assessment, and the IPBES-IPCC Joint Workshop Report in the publication.  Sat, 29/04/2023 CMousnier IUCN Issues Guideline for Working with Indigenous & Local Knowledge (ILK) in IUCN Red List assessments Informed by IPBES Work on ILK English (396) IUCN have issued guidelines for working with Indigenous & Local Knowledge (ILK) in assessments of red list species. The document builds on discussions that have taken place over the last decade between the IUCN CEESP-SSC Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group and the IUCN SSC Red List Committee and draws on experience from the IPBES ILK Approach. Indeed the IPBES Global Assessment (GA) was the first global scale assessment to engage systematically with ILK. The document refers to IPBES' work which has influenced and informed this process by IUCN. Moreover, various IPBES experts and knowledge holders have contributed to this document, including Marla R. Emery, Flore Lafaye de Micheaux and Phil Lyver.

In other words, the work of IPBES has provided a framework and approach to engage with ILK and IPLCs in scientific assessments, and this has influenced the development of these guidelines for gathering and utilizing ILK in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  Mon, 27/11/2023 Fernando Neda German Hunters Use IPBES Science to Advocate for Better Measures to Control Invasive Alien Species German (435) The German Hunters Association (DJV) has called on the "federal and state governments to better coordinate management measures for invasive species in the future and commit to hunting as a tool for species protection."

Citing the IPBES Assessment on Invasive Alien Species and their Control, the DJV stated: "Only recently, [IPBES] pointed out the negative, sometimes irreversible effects of invasive alien species on biological diversity: along with habitat loss, they are one of the five main causes of global species loss."

"Current political measures for management and their implementation are inadequate and there is an urgent need for action," it continued. Focusing on raccoons, the DJV claims that planned restrictions on hunting in Rhineland-Palatinate and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania endanger biodiversity and that the species benefits from the ban on trapping. The firm points out how the report "highlights the key elements investors and policymakers should consider when incorporating biodiversity into investment processes."

"Many of the lessons learned from climate action can be directly applied to natural capital, including biodiversity," Jupiter states.  Fri, 19/08/2022 Anonymous Building on Momentum Created by IPBES, French Ecological Defense Council Makes Commitments and Abandons Major Shopping Development to Protect Biodiversity French (397) The French Ecological Defense Council, founded after President Emmanuel Macron’s meeting with IPBES experts days after the release of the Global Assessment, held its third meeting and announced new commitments to protect biodiversity. During the 7 November meeting at the Elysée Palace, the council focused on addressing the artificialisation of soils, the conversion of wasteland, the protection of nature and the enhancement of forests. The council announced that it will abandon the Europacity project, a mega shopping and leisure center envisaged in the north of Paris, to protect local biodiversity.
