301 | Fri, 17/11/2023 | Anonymous | IPBES Selected as 2020 WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award Winner | English (396) | The WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award announced on 22 May 2020, the International Day for Biological Diversity, that IPBES was selected as the recipient of its 2020 award, focused on the theme biodiversity, which also includes a prize of one million Swedish Kronor. IPBES was recognized specifically for the Global Assessment and the platform's "decisive role in outlining the drivers of biodiversity loss, communicating the magnitude of the problem and laying the groundwork for a new agenda and transformative change in relation to biodiversity." "IPBES has had a decisive role in outlining the drivers of biodiversity loss, communicating the magnitude of the problem and laying the groundwork for a new agenda and transformative change in relation to biodiversity. Through their methodology, which includes research in both natural and social science as well as including the importance of indigenous peoples’ knowledge and experience, they have increased the opportunities for evidence-based decision making by policymakers. Since its inception in 2012, by engaging and uniting the world’s nations around the issue of biodiversity, IPBES has played a crucial role in setting the groundwork for the change we need to address this crisis in the near future." 460 | Fri, 19/08/2022 | bcurley1012 | Building on Key Finding in IPBES Assessment, Literature Review Article Unpacks the Concept of Transformative Governance. | English (396) | This review builds on key findings of IPBES Assessment and has been elaborated to operationalize the concept of transformative governance. The article argues that transformative governance is needed to enable the transformative change necessary for achieving global sustainability goals. It must be: integrative, inclusive, adaptive, and pluralist. The article further argues that governance becomes transformative only when these four governance approaches are: implemented in conjunction; operationalized in a specific manner; and focused on addressing the indirect drivers underlying sustainability issues. |

555 | Sat, 29/04/2023 | Fernando Neda | Protocol Developed to Operationalize IPBES Nature Futures Framework (NFF) by Combining it with Multi-Objective Optimization | English (396) | Through a case study of a rural landscape in northeastern Japan, researchers have developed a protocol with three specifications for operationalizing the IPBES Nature Futures Framework (NFF) in a landscape scenario analysis using a multi-objective optimization framework composed of: (1) exploring nature-positive futures, (2) seeking alternative pathways for targets satisfying visions of plural values, and (3) screening key direct drivers to achieve the targets. This study modeled the NFF-based scenarios by applying the concept of multi-objective optimization and a landscape change model to explore desirable futures, seek targets in the NFF state space, and screen response options for reaching these targets in the Bekambeushi River watershed in northeastern Japan. The protocol identified multiple, but few nature-positive and Pareto optimal strategies that satisfied NFF visions; nature-positive, but not Pareto optimal strategies; and non-nature-positive strategies. The protocol also identified key response options to achieve three different NFF value perspectives in the case study area: (1) clear or selective cutting in forestry and (2) solar PV installation on abandoned pastureland in agriculture and energy sectors. |

516 | Thu, 06/10/2022 | Fernando Neda | IPBES Conceptual Framework Applied to Research on Nature's Contributions to Andean Pastoral Peoples | English (396) | Through a comprehensive analysis of field data and literature about the Andean region, identifying the current status of research and knowledge gaps, researchers have used the IPBES conceptual framework to pinpoint Nature's Contributions to the peoples of Puna in the Central Andes. The research analyzed local trends in the capacity of nature to keep providing contributions to good quality of life from 1990 to the present. Indicators proposed by IPBES (2019) served as a reference and were adapted to the local scenario. The research was able to identify contributions such as (1) Habitat creation and maintenance, as well as regulation of freshwater, (2) Pollination and seed dispersal, (3) Regulation of climate and air quality, (4) Formation and protection of soils and sediments, (5) Formation and protection of soils and sediments, (6) Regulation of hazards and extreme events, (7) Regulation of biological processes, pests, and diseases, and (8) Food and feed, among others. |

601 | Wed, 22/11/2023 | Fernando Neda | Scientists Use Nature Futures Framework and IPBES Science to Explore Desirable Futures for the High Seas | English (396) | Through a series of workshops outlined in a new research paper, scientists undertook "a futures thinking process that could use the Nature Futures Framework [NFF] as a mechanism to bring more transformative energy into how humans conceptualise the high seas and therefore how we aim to govern the ocean." Published in the July 2023 edition of the Marine Policy journal, the study found that "engaging with the future through science fiction narratives allowed a more radical appreciation of what could be and infusing science with artistic elements can inspire audiences beyond academia." The study also references the IPBES Global Assessment (2019) and the IPBES Scoping Report for the Transformative Change Assessment. "Recognising the need for more pluralistic, transformative and positive scenarios for nature, the IPBES task force on scenarios and models developed the NFF for use in research and governance processes that require a sense of what potential futures could be possible, even the more radical," wrote the authors. "Operationalizing the NFF in the high seas provides a key, timely case study for examining the need for transformative change, the role of envisioning futures, how transformative change can occur and the process of rolling out transformative change. This output could feed directly into the ongoing IPBES assessment of the underlying causes of biodiversity loss and the determinants of transformative change and options for achieving the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity," they continued. |

The initiative was partly based on the findings of the IPBES Workshop Report on Biodiversity and Pandemics, and was mentioned by Minister Steffie Lemke at the opening ceremony of #IPBES9 in Bonn in July 2022. N4H brings together the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and EcoHealth Alliance. | New/changed action/initiative | Other | 2022-08-23 | USD | 50000000 | Global |
