 Wed, 24/08/2022 Anonymous EUR 50 Million Nature for Health (N4H) Initiative on Preventing Pandemics Launched Based Partly on IPBES Report on Biodiversity and Pandemics English (396) Through an initial contribution of EUR 50 million from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) via Germany's International Climate Initiative (IKI), the Nature for Health (N4H) Initiative has been launched to prevent future pandemics by fostering locally developed and integrated approaches to secure the health of people, animals and the environment. The initiative was partly based on the findings of the IPBES Workshop Report on Biodiversity and Pandemics, and was mentioned by Minister Steffie Lemke at the opening ceremony of #IPBES9 in Bonn in July 2022.  Wed, 19/04/2023 Anonymous Nordic Council of Ministers Employs IPBES Findings in New Proposal on Dietary Guidelines English (396) In 2016, the Nordic Council of Ministers took the initiative to update the scientific foundation for national nutrient recommendations and dietary guidelines in Nordic and Baltic countries. A draft of the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) 2023 was developed and launched for public consultation on 31 March 2023.

In accordance with its scope and mandate, the report assessed the environmental effects of foods and food groups. It states: "The sixth assessment reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (141, 142) and the Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (143) (IPBES) are pillars in the evaluation of environmental impact of food consumption in NNR2023."

The NNR project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) and the food and health authorities in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway. As associated members of the Nordic Council of Ministers, health authorities from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were invited to participate in the NNR Committee with one observer each. Researchers Use IPBES Approach to Conduct Quantitative Literature Review English (396) Researchers undertook a quantitative assessment of the genetic properties of small and isolated populations considered to fall into the “insular” category. The 2019 IPBES Global Assessment emphasized the importance of formal consideration of ecosystems considered to be “insular” due to their inherent vulnerability. These insular populations are expected to suffer from lower levels of genetic diversity, particularly when they are small, and scientists undertaking this research intended to find this out.

The researchers concluded that “insularity had relatively minor effects on genetic diversity within and among populations, which points to the more important role of other factors in shaping evolutionary processes…insularity influenced genetic diversity in a study system when genetic diversity was high even in non-insular populations of the same study system—suggesting an important role for the scope’ of influences on genetic diversity.”

According to Microsoft, the IPBES findings show that “we need to act urgently”. Shazam4Nature is an “acoustic biodiversity monitoring system that captures and records animal sounds through sensitive microphones, and evaluates the acoustic signals using artificial intelligence (AI) in the Azure cloud”.
