 Wed, 22/11/2023 Fernando Neda Scientists Use Nature Futures Framework and IPBES Science to Explore Desirable Futures for the High Seas English (396) Through a series of workshops outlined in a new research paper, scientists undertook "a futures thinking process that could use the Nature Futures Framework [NFF] as a mechanism to bring more transformative energy into how humans conceptualise the high seas and therefore how we aim to govern the ocean."

Published in the July 2023 edition of the Marine Policy journal, the study found that "engaging with the future through science fiction narratives allowed a more radical appreciation of what could be and infusing science with artistic elements can inspire audiences beyond academia."

The study also references the IPBES Global Assessment (2019) and the IPBES Scoping Report for the Transformative Change Assessment. "Recognising the need for more pluralistic, transformative and positive scenarios for nature, the IPBES task force on scenarios and models developed the NFF for use in research and governance processes that require a sense of what potential futures could be possible, even the more radical," wrote the authors.

"Operationalizing the NFF in the high seas provides a key, timely case study for examining the need for transformative change, the role of envisioning futures, how transformative change can occur and the process of rolling out transformative change. This output could feed directly into the ongoing IPBES assessment of the underlying causes of biodiversity loss and the determinants of transformative change and options for achieving the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity," they continued.  Mon, 27/11/2023 Amarys Preuss French Foundation for Biodiversity Research Publishes Prospective Study, Building on IPBES Work and Concepts to Define Future Fields for Biodiversity Research French (397) The French Foundation for Biodiversity Research conducted a prospective study to defines the pillars of biodiversity research in the years to come, in order to highlight gaps and support coordination among researchers and funders.
The study builds upon the various IPBES products to identify existing knowledge and research needs. It also makes use of concepts from IPBES' work, in particular the Nature Futures Framework and the concept of transformative change, to define the fourth pillar of research potential "Systemic responses: transformative change and leverage measures".

A conference will take place on 6 December 2023 to present the results of this study to the research community.  Mon, 27/11/2023 Fernando Neda Researchers Operationalize IPBES Nature Futures Framework to Catalyze Development of Nature-Future Scenarios English (396) Members of the IPBES task force on scenarios and models have provided an example of how the Nature Futures Framework can be implemented for the development of illustrative narratives representing a diversity of desirable nature futures: information that can be used to assess and develop scenarios and models whilst acknowledging the underpinning value perspectives on nature.

To explore the interdependence between narratives, and therefore their potential to be translated into scenarios and models, six narratives developed were assessed around three areas of the transformative change debate, specifically, (1) land sparing vs. land sharing, (2) Half Earth vs. Whole Earth conservation, and (3) green growth vs. post-growth economic development.

The paper concludes with an assessment of how the Nature Futures Framework could be used to assist in developing and articulating transformative pathways towards desirable nature futures.

 Sat, 29/04/2023 CMousnier IUCN Issues Guideline for Working with Indigenous & Local Knowledge (ILK) in IUCN Red List assessments Informed by IPBES Work on ILK English (396) IUCN have issued guidelines for working with Indigenous & Local Knowledge (ILK) in assessments of red list species. The document builds on discussions that have taken place over the last decade between the IUCN CEESP-SSC Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group and the IUCN SSC Red List Committee and draws on experience from the IPBES ILK Approach. Indeed the IPBES Global Assessment (GA) was the first global scale assessment to engage systematically with ILK. The document refers to IPBES' work which has influenced and informed this process by IUCN. Moreover, various IPBES experts and knowledge holders have contributed to this document, including Marla R. Emery, Flore Lafaye de Micheaux and Phil Lyver.

In other words, the work of IPBES has provided a framework and approach to engage with ILK and IPLCs in scientific assessments, and this has influenced the development of these guidelines for gathering and utilizing ILK in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  Mon, 27/11/2023 Fernando Neda IPBES Science 'Instrumental' in Development of UNESCO Guidance for African Biosphere Reserves English (396) IPBES has been "instrumental" in the development of a new manual for decision-makers, managers and stakeholders of African biosphere reserves, and beyond, according to António Abreu, Director of UNESCO's Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences. "Filling a gap in the Man and the Biosphere community and beyond, [the] manual [provides] its readers with the necessary tools and knowledge to engage their communities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals," states the publication.

Funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, "Guidance for the assessment of ecosystem services in African Biosphere Reserves: a way forward to sustainable development," was developed based on a cooperation between UNESCO and the Capacities for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development (CEBIOS) programme of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Science. "For the first time, a specific, user-friendly manual dedicated to assess ecosystem services was created for biosphere reserve managers and decision-makers, and adapted to the African biosphere reserve context."

Building on several IPBES reports, as well as its Conceptual Framework, the manual highlights how the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment underlines "the need for improved understanding of the interactions between ecosystem services and the goals and targets to end poverty and hunger and to enhance people’s well-being."

This comprehensive evaluation is conducted with the technical support of the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre through the National Ecosystem Assessment Initiative, under the umbrella of the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net).  Mon, 26/02/2024 Amarys Preuss Swedish University and Farming data platform conduct a pilot study for measurement of farm impact on nature and biodiversity, citing IPBES highlights of the interlinked nature and climate challenges Swedish (506) The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Agronod - a farm data sharing platform - have developed a new tool in a pilot study making it possible to calculate and report biodiversity as well as climate impacts for a given farm and/or a specific production branch. The purpose of this tool is based on the linkage between climate and biodiversity challenges according to IPBES reports: the study proposes to support agricultural actors to be able to measure their impact on biodiversity and nature.

The feasibility study includes, among other things:
- A review of 16 different international methods for measuring the value of biodiversity.
- Factors that affect biodiversity in arable landscapes in Sweden. Characteristics of the landscape and management methods that affect the nature around and on the farm.
- Factors and measures that affect the value of biodiversity on individual farms.

IPBES was recognized specifically for the Global Assessment and the platform's "decisive role in outlining the drivers of biodiversity loss, communicating the magnitude of the problem and laying the groundwork for a new agenda and transformative change in relation to biodiversity."

Her loon explosion, titled ”In The Red”, showcasing the quintessentially Canadian loon, is meant to echo the idea of “annihilation”. The title is a nod to the International Union for Concerned Scientists’ "Red List" of Threatened Species, while the loon is hemmed in by concrete, which is an allusion to the rampant habitat destruction that’s fueling the current biological annihilation.
