The research analyzed local trends in the capacity of nature to keep providing contributions to good quality of life from 1990 to the present. Indicators proposed by IPBES (2019) served as a reference and were adapted to the local scenario. The research was able to identify contributions such as (1) Habitat creation and maintenance, as well as regulation of freshwater, (2) Pollination and seed dispersal, (3) Regulation of climate and air quality, (4) Formation and protection of soils and sediments, (5) Formation and protection of soils and sediments, (6) Regulation of hazards and extreme events, (7) Regulation of biological processes, pests, and diseases, and (8) Food and feed, among others. |

553 | Mon, 27/11/2023 | Fernando Neda | Researchers Build on IPBES Sustainable Use of Wild Species Report to Examine National Implications of its Findings for South Africa | English (396) | Research published in the South African Journal of Science (March 2023) builds on the recent findings of the IPBES Sustainable Use of Wild Species Assessment Report to examine the national implications of the assessment for South Africa, also drawing on insights from local contributing authors. In drawing these links, the researchers make the point that South Africa is a megadiverse country with a population that relies extensively on the use of wild species for food, energy, medicine, and income, amongst many other purposes. They also argue that the IPBES Sustainable Use of Wild Species assessment provides impetus for placing biodiversity at the centre of sustainable development in South African policy. | New/changed research project | Website | The sustainable use of wild species benefits biodiversity and human well-being in South Africa | The sustainable use of wild species benefits biodiversity and human well-being in South Africa | https://sajs.co.za/article/view/15739 | 2023-03-29 | National | Africa | South Africa |

465 | Fri, 19/08/2022 | bcurley1012 | The Artwork of Julie Sperling, Canadian Mosaic Artist and Environment Policy Analyst, is an Emotional Response to Key IPBES Assessment Findings and is a Call to Action for Transformative Change | English (396) | In a blog post Julie Sperling, Canadian mosaic artist and policy analyst with Environment and Climate Change Canada, cites key findings from IPBES Global Assessment, and makes personal and intimate the loss of global biodiversity through her art. Her loon explosion, titled ”In The Red”, showcasing the quintessentially Canadian loon, is meant to echo the idea of “annihilation”. The title is a nod to the International Union for Concerned Scientists’ "Red List" of Threatened Species, while the loon is hemmed in by concrete, which is an allusion to the rampant habitat destruction that’s fueling the current biological annihilation. Her art is a call to action: "So look into that loon’s eyes, harness the uneasiness, sadness, loss, guilt, rage, or whatever else you might feel, and channel it. I’ll be right there with you, fighting for our existence". | Other | Expressive arts | Website | Their annihilation will also be ours: Exploring extinction through art | Their annihilation will also be ours: Exploring extinction through art | http://sperlingmosaics.com/2019/05/their-annihilation-will-also-be-ours-exploring-extinction-through-art/ | 2021-05-12 | Americas | Canada | private | Britt | Curley | IPBES | Programme Management Assistant - Communications | Secretariat: Bonn | |||||||||||||
627 | Mon, 26/02/2024 | Amarys Preuss | Dutch Minister for Nature Briefs Parliament on IPBES 10 Plenary Decisions and Implications for Dutch Biodiversity Policies | Dutch (425) | On 6 December 2023 the Dutch Minister for Nature and Nitrogen briefed the Netherlands Parliament on the outcomes of the 10th IPBES Plenary session (28 August-2 September 2023). The Minister proposes several policies to be implemented in light of the decisions adopted at IPBES10: - Invasive alien species: proposal for the continued and urgent implementation of the European Exotics Species Regulation, introduction of a national invasive species regulation, developing an approach and national strategy plan focused on prevention and early elimination, in accordance with the findings of the IPBES Invasive Alien Species Report which highlighted the lower cost of prevention of biological invasions rather than control and management of such invasions after they have taken place. - IPBES-IPCC collaboration: national focal points for both intergovernmental organisations are encouraged to seek more cooperation at their own level, following the IPBES decision encouraging more interaction with IPCC counterparts. - Dutch commitment to IPBES: The government commits to continuing its participation in SPM negociations, to ensure uptake and awareness of IPBES reports and attract more scientists and knowledge holders in IPBES processes. One key tool created for implementation of this policy is the creation of the Dutch IPBES Secretariat in May 2023, hosted by Naturalis and IUCN-NL. |

586 | Fri, 17/11/2023 | Fernando Neda | Citing IPBES Reports, 200 Health Journals Urge WHO to Declare Nature Crisis as Health Emergency | English (396) | Over 200 health journals have urged the World Health Organization to declare the climate and nature crisis as a global health emergency. To make their case, the authors cite science published in the report for the IPBES-IPCC co-sponsored workshop on biodiversity and climate change (2021). "The research communities that provide the evidence for the 2 COPs [...] were brought together for a workshop in 2020 when they concluded that 'Only by considering climate and biodiversity as parts of the same complex problem…can solutions be developed that avoid maladaptation and maximize the beneficial outcomes'", they explained. "Globally, about a fifth of people rely on wild species for food and their livelihoods," also quoted the authors, taking from the IPBES Assessment report on the sustainable use of wild species (2022). The editorial was published in leading titles from around the world, including The BMJ, The Lancet, JAMA, the Medical Journal of Australia, the East African Medical Journal, the National Medical Journal of India and Dubai Medical Journal. |

460 | Fri, 19/08/2022 | bcurley1012 | Building on Key Finding in IPBES Assessment, Literature Review Article Unpacks the Concept of Transformative Governance. | English (396) | This review builds on key findings of IPBES Assessment and has been elaborated to operationalize the concept of transformative governance. The article argues that transformative governance is needed to enable the transformative change necessary for achieving global sustainability goals. It must be: integrative, inclusive, adaptive, and pluralist. The article further argues that governance becomes transformative only when these four governance approaches are: implemented in conjunction; operationalized in a specific manner; and focused on addressing the indirect drivers underlying sustainability issues. |

611 | Wed, 06/12/2023 | Fernando Neda | Science from IPBES Pollination Report at Heart of New Global 'Trillion Bees' Coalition to Develop Projects and Actions to Protect Pollinators | English (396) | A new global coalition is coming together with a mission to raise awareness to reverse biodiversity loss and save our planet’s pollinators. To be presented for the first time at COP28 in Dubai this December, the new global coalition Trillion Bees is inviting businesses, organisations and industry leaders to join its mission and ‘Bee The Change’ to help protect the world’s pollinators. The network aims to be a new global coalition and unified force of science-led individuals, businesses and organisations committed to raising awareness and driving behaviour change to create a world where pollinators thrive, in order to sustain healthy ecosystems and secure the wellbeing of people and nature. "Over the next 7 years, we’re set to engage and mobilise over 2 billion people worldwide, and aim to raise over $1 billion dollars to support nature restoration and transformative projects to save our pollinators," the Coalition has pledged. Trillion Bees is a science-led initiative supported by a scientific advisory board of some of the world’s leading scientists, chaired by Professor Simon Potts (co-Chair IPBES Pollination Assessment). The board is currently developing the Theory of Change (a methodology of projects and expected outcomes), which is based on the IPBES [Pollinators] Assessment Report and decisions adopted by the UN Biodiversity Conference COP13, and will be the organisation’s north star for action.
