357 | Mon, 04/04/2022 | Patrick.Tonissen | European Economic and Social Committee Cites IPBES Global Assessment in Opinion on EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy and Calls for Higher Ambition | English (396) | The IPBES Global Assessment was cited prominently in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)'s Opinion on the EU's 2030 Biodiversity Strategy as reason for higher levels of ambition. "A report published in 2019 by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biological Diversity and Ecosystem Services warned of an increase in the rate of species extinction and a decline in global ecosystem health. The report also makes clear that biodiversity loss can be neither reduced nor halted without fundamental structural changes in society. The authors of the report expect the changes needed to come up against considerable opposition from those who benefit from the status quo. However, it is possible and necessary in the public interest to find a way out of this situation." |

476 | Thu, 25/08/2022 | Anonymous | Francophone Africa Regional Trialogue Background Document Based on the IPBES Assessment Findings | French (397) | The manifestations of biodiversity crisis, such as the decline of pollinator populations and land degradation, indicate the approaching of a critical tipping point for humanity. Biodiversity loss is reducing nature’s contributions to humanity, strongly impacting rural communities and countries dependent on agricultural production. Africa is particularly vulnerable to land degradation, with two-thirds of its land surface estimated to be already degraded to some degree, affecting at least 65 % of the entire African population. The Francophone Africa Regional Trialogue was initially planned to bring together representatives from seven sub-Saharan African countries: Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Togo. It has been postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and representatives from these seven countries met online during the lockdown period for the Virtual Trialogue for the Community of Practice on 2–25 November 2020. In 2022, when the health emergency subsided, planning resumed for the physical Trialogue events, as the added value of face-to-face interaction is difficult to match online. However, in some parts of the world, travel restrictions persist. A decision was therefore made to proceed with the application of the regional Trialogue methodology in one country, Cameroon, at least for this year. The next Trialogue is planned to take place in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on 25–27 October 2022. The Cameroon Trialogue will replace the Francophone Africa Trialogue and will focus on discussing issues related to land degradation and restoration, pollinators and the sustainable use of wild species. More information may be found here and in the attached concept note. From 2023, subject to local circumstances, BES-Net will shift fully back to the original regional Trialogue modality and continuously promote awareness-creation and uptake of the IPBES assessments at the national and wider levels. The reference information for the Trialogue event is compiled in the Background Document, which focuses on the status of biodiversity loss in general and specifically on land degradation and pollination in the seven target countries. The document was developed based on the IPBES Assessment findings, as well as the results of the survey carried out in the form of questionnaires or direct interviews with resource persons representing the participating countries. |

Throughout 2022, ACTO is carrying out a rapid assessment, delving deeper into the results for the Amazon region of the IPBES Global and Regional (Americas) Assessments on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. The assessment follows the IPBES conceptual and methodological framework. A scientific workshop was held on "Identifying gaps on the state of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the Amazon Region." This technical meeting, which took place on 24 January 2022, brought together more than 100 researchers, including Maria Helena Zaccagnini and Jake Rice, co-chairs of the IPBES Regional Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for the Americas. The authors shared insights on information available to date andparticipated in a discussion about the added value of the ACTO rapid assessment. |

The project got a funding of EUR 4.1 million from the EU's research and innovation program Horizon Europe. Duration of the project is four years. Ten partners from eight European countries form the consortium. BIONEXT will develop knowledge, tools, and guidance for mainstreaming biodiversity into policy-making and provide concrete options on how to initiate, accelerate and upscale biodiversity relevant transformative change in society. BIONEXT will involve policy- and decision-makers and allow them to explore the concept of just transformative change. One of the six 'work packages' of the project will be: Knowledge and science brokerage for IPBES assessments and EU policy |

535 | Mon, 06/02/2023 | Fernando Neda | Guided by IPBES-IPCC Joint Workshop Report, Eurelectric Proposes Solutions for EU Clean Energy Transition while Restoring & Protecting Biodiversity | English (396) | "Renewable energy generation and ecological restoration are critical tools to combat climate change. Climate change and biodiversity loss should be tackled together," according to Eurelectric when launching its “Power Plant” project at its Power Summit held in Brussels in June 2022. Eurelectric – the 3500-member strong federation of the European electricity industry – aims to "lead Europe’s energy transition with clean electricity." In response to the IPBES-IPCC Co-Sponsored Workshop Report, the association claims it is exploring "the potential of limiting global warming while protecting biodiversity" by working with "leading utilities – including frontrunners aiming to be net contributors to biodiversity – as well as civil society, to identify best practices while deploying renewable energy and restoring nature." The project explores synergies (and proposes solutions) for biodiversity protection/restoration and solar, wind and hydro electric power, as well as electrical grids & storage. According to the association: "Electrification, supported by a massive rollout of renewables, can break the cycle of degradation, and help regenerate biodiversity...Power Plant illustrates how the electricity industry can support the natural world and regenerate biodiversity through integrated renewable energy projects." |
