Biodiversity data and indicator development and provision for IPBES regional and global assessments

Project title Biodiversity data and indicator development and provision for IPBES regional and global assessments

Abstract IPBES regional and global assessments are reliant on quality-vetted, transparent and regionally representative data and information to address status and trends in biodiversity (IPBES/3/INF/4). Time-efficient, scientifically rigorous, and consistent reporting on these elements is a challenge shared by all regional assessments. The proposed project will build capacity to address this need by extending and customizing content, indicators and tools provided by Map of Life, a global resource for biodiversity monitoring and mapping endorsed by GEO BON and Future Earth.
Project Description Regional and global assessments are expected to provide quantitative reporting that appropriately identifies gaps, addresses the whole reporting region, and allows comparisons among regions and synthesis in a global assessment (IPBES/3/9). This is challenged by the highly uneven nature of available data and information on the status and trends of species.

Map of Life – with support from NSF, NASA and in partnership with Future Earth, GEO BON, GBIF and others – has built an infrastructure that integrates species distribution and remote sensing data and can provide indicators addressing Aichi Targets 5, 11, 12, and 19. All are recommended for use in IPBES regional assessments (IPBES/3/INF/4) and have seen approval in first author meetings.

The proposed project will leverage this initiative and build further capacity serving IPBES regional and global assessment needs. It will work directly with regional assessments to identify data gaps and where possible update data and provide model-based predictions to most effectively address reporting needs. The project will develop interactive tools, including an online assessment workbench, and customized products that use globally integrated biodiversity and remote sensing data, indicators, and other summaries – all developed synergistically for each reporting region. TSUs and authors will be able to directly liaise with project staff to receive support for the mobilization, visualization and use of spatial biodiversity data, the reporting of species indicators, and the preparation of consistent report statistics, maps, and graphs.
