Abstract | CCBPI provides leadership in alignment of curriculum, training, research and policy with needs of IPBES. A course targeting graduate students and practitioners is entrenched and offered in summer school. Development of courses for ILK and policy makers, and influence on basic education’s curricula is undertaken. Local and international networks are fostered, and capacity for research is enhanced. Communities are jointly engaged in product development, and biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. Information is disseminated through mass media, meetings, conferences and publications |
Project Description | The CCBPI is an initiative of University of Eldoret and IUNCBD linked to implementation of the CBD and complementary policy agenda of international agreements and organizations. CCBPI leverages on experience of its host, the regions premier School of Environmental Studies (est 1984), in capacity building for region’s institutions. The collaborators have jointly developed a summer school curriculum targeting graduate student, whose contents are aligned to the implementation of the IPBES strategies and Aichi targets; engage with VIRED and is currently involved with IPBES in Regional assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services for Africa. We plan to train practitioners, communities, and influence the ongoing national pre-university curricula review. We would wish enhance our research capacity on: biodiversity assessment, product development of biodiversity – based materials, identification of alternative means of livelihoods, and policy formulation and implementation. The project links with ILK; national and local policy formulating and implementing organs and various regional higher learning institutions; and encourage exchange visits between collaborating institutions and ILKs. Information of CCBPI activities and outcomes will be disseminated through mass media, newsletters and briefs, and in a Website. International targets will be informed through peer reviewed publications and attendance of conferences. Additionally, pilot plots will be set up to demonstrate sustainability and optimization of biodiversity-based resources. |
