Avenue de Sebta, Mhannech II TETOUAN 93002 Morocco MOROCCO http://www.atomm.ma 7th mediterranean conference on marine turtles Activity or event (e.g., meeting, workshop, webinar, conference, article, website) Data management and knowledge generation Message from the President
Dear friends and colleagues,
It is my great pleasure and honour to invite you to our 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles, scheduled for 18 - 21 October 2022, which is being organized by the University of Abdelmalek Essaadi, Faculty of Sciences_Tetouan and ATOMM. The Conference will take place in Morocco, in the city of Tetouan on the coast of the Western Mediterranean, one of the most important feeding and migratory habitats for Mediterranean sea turtles.
The city of Tetouan is one of Morocco's most famous tourist destinations with a diverse historical and cultural heritage. Tetouan is considered "the most Andalusian city in Morocco”. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the area contains beautiful landscapes and historical monuments. The logo of the 7th conference with the map of the Mediterranean Sea symbolizes the common history of peoples and our contemporary efforts aimed at the conservation of sea turtles and the marine environment.
Since the beginning, in 2001, our Mediterranean conferences have been supported by the UNEP MAP-RAC/SPA, Bern Convention, the Convention for Migratory Species, and now by US Fish and Wildlife Service. Their support will help us bring invited speakers, and provide travel and accommodation grants in order to make this conference available to as many of our colleagues as possible.
We will invite prominent colleagues working in the field of sea turtle conservation to discuss collaborative opportunities. This is why the theme of the 7th Conference is “Sea Turtles Conservation after the Pandemic”.
The conference venue is the Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach And Spa (https://www.sofitel-tamudabay.com), located 15 minutes away in Tetouan. The Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach And Spa chain of hotels and resorts has a history of supporting environmental and conservation projects. They have offered us a good deal for congress facilities and accommodation for participants. There are several international airports nearby (Tangier and Tetouan Airports) and Taxi shuttles service from Tangier (1 hour) and Tetouan (15 minutes) to the Hotel.
I invite you all – students, professionals, and all who care about sea turtles and the future of the Mediterranean– to register and come to Tetouan for the 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles. My team and I will do our best to make this Conference a memorable scientific, professional, and social event – the reunion of old friends with the new generation of sea turtle researchers and conservationists.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Tetouan!
On behalf of the Conference Organizing and Program Committees,
Mustapha Aksissou

Support to communities of practice engaging in IPBES Indigenous and local knowledge systems, Scenarios and models From a methodological approach that integrates elements of education for comprehensive water management and for adaptation to Climate Change, with a design approach for transitions and adaptive management of socio-ecological systems. An exploratory study will be carried out through interviews with key actors (academics, members of civil society organizations, federal government officials, municipal government officials, teachers, agricultural producers and inhabitants) and surveys of middle school students (high schools and high schools) for:

1) Carry out a general survey of the current situation at the level of water security (access to drinking water in adequate quantity and quality to cover their consumption, sanitation, hygiene and health needs).
2) Carry out a general survey regarding the state of the ecosystems and their capacity to continue providing hydrological ecosystem services, on which both people and biodiversity depend.
3) Know if the organizational, management, infrastructure and knowledge resources available to the population allow it to be resilient or adapt to extreme hydrometeorological phenomena derived from Climate Change, such as drought.
4) Know the visions of the future of adults and young people regarding the ideal of community development.

The results of the research will make it possible to assess current opportunities, gaps and challenges. What will allow the design of a relevant and culturally appropriate knowledge management strategy, and that facilitates the creation of capacities to increase community resilience and adaptation to Climate Change.

The ocean is undergoing rapid change due to increasing CO2 emissions resulting in serious risks to its biodiversity and ecosystems, and global society. This will continue unless unprecedented action is taken. Panelists summarized the findings of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and IPBES assessments and new societal and scientific initiatives for sustaining this unique habitat and Earth’s essential life support system.

The event aimed to inspire more Parties and non-Parties to enable future ocean-related climate and biodiversity action within their NDCs, to accelerate multi-stakeholder collaboration, to contribute to objectives of achieving Net Zero in a sustainable way and making (ocean) nature part of the solution, ensuring all hands on deck for “the NDCs we want”.

An organization/Project or governance infrastructure scoring more than 80% or working to achieve this target can be considered sustainable and other matter of financing instruments and green technologies development are automatically inculcated in it. Therefore,, I suggest to all stakeholder of IPBES to incorporate this tool in all matters of capacity-building processes to achieve the goals of SDG 14 and also make it part of the political declaration of UNOC 2022 to further its implementation through UNCLOS and ISA. It is a great concept to adopt and I hope most of the nations would support it because its implementation gives a win win situation for every one and nothing to loose with respect to Climate Change and environmental impacts.
I am ready to contribute knowledge in this matter, if stakeholders are interested to further its applications and in my opinion it should be taken up before the UNOC 2022, so that some consensus among the stakeholders should be developed before this event for its approval.
