This initiative will enhance individual and community capacities for supporting the development and use of IPBES deliverables because Uganda is one country that is lagging behind in the dissemination of the IPBES works and we want to believe that to strengthen the role of local and indigenous communities in the implementation of IPBES works especially building and supporting their practice in conservation is essential when we work closely with local and indigenous communities, governments and non-state actors to create and improve the chances of tilting the balance in negotiations in favor of biodiversity. The contribution is in line with the IPBES 2030 work programme which includes building capacity as one of its six objectives and particularly it shall build the capacity and strengthen the knowledge foundations of the Karamojong indigenous Nomadic Pastoralist of North East Uganda and Iteso local community and it’s seen as supporting the policy. The two communities are chosen because they are situated amid areas of high biodiversity and other values of nature in the country. We aim to build the capacities of the target communities to make known the IPBES works and reports on biodiversity and ecosystem services. These products when understood by the target communities shall make good country’s dual goal of improving the management of natural resources and people’s quality of life and aimed to conserve wildlands and their biodiversity while simultaneously balancing the needs of local people, sustaining ecosystem dynamics and resilience, and ensuring continuity for future generations. This contribution undertakes community engagement of IPBES reports using bottom-up empowerment and it is justified that working to engage communities to understand assessment/research reports is considered a practical and pragmatic way of improving the delivery of outcomes and making interventions more cost-effective. |

The ocean is undergoing rapid change due to increasing CO2 emissions resulting in serious risks to its biodiversity and ecosystems, and global society. This will continue unless unprecedented action is taken. Panelists summarized the findings of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and IPBES assessments and new societal and scientific initiatives for sustaining this unique habitat and Earth’s essential life support system. The event aimed to inspire more Parties and non-Parties to enable future ocean-related climate and biodiversity action within their NDCs, to accelerate multi-stakeholder collaboration, to contribute to objectives of achieving Net Zero in a sustainable way and making (ocean) nature part of the solution, ensuring all hands on deck for “the NDCs we want”. UNEP-WCMC delivers capacity building activities tailored to the needs of each of our partner countries and facilitates regional and global knowledge sharing. All capacity building materials developed as part of the Initiative are made freely available on the NEA Initiative website. The capacity building activities mentioned include: 1. One-to-one country support tailored to each country partner on technical and methodological aspects of the assessment process, as well as strengthening the science-policy-practitioner dialogue. 2. Webinars, in-person and online workshops relating to specific stages of the assessment process (e.g. scoping stage, using assessment findings, roles and responsibilities) and on specific technical topics (e.g. scenarios, multiple-evidence based approach, economic valuation). 3. Guidance documents which aim to support countries to tailor the IPBES assessment process to specific national contexts, strengthen the science-policy-practitioner dialogue and enhance the use of national ecosystem assessments to support decision-making, including national level implementation of multi-lateral environmental agreements . 4. Capturing and synthesizing lessons learned on conducting sub-global ecosystem assessments, and supporting networking opportunities for practitioners involved in such assessments across the world. The NEA Initiative will deliver further capacity building activities . This year, we have a global capacity building workshop planned and we will continue to organise webinars and develop further capacity building resources. |
