Basically a marine biologist having expertise on the marine biodiversity of India especially on the Coral Reefs and their associated faunal communities. Documented the marine faunal diversity of India, faunal diversity of estuarine ecosystem of India, faunal diversity of Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve, faunal diversity of one Marine National Park and 10 Marine Sanctuaries in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Published 35 books and 245 papers pertaining to various aspects of marine biodiversity. Served as a Lead Author in the Asia Pacific Biodiversity Assessment of IPBES (Chapter 3). Participated and represented the country/ one of the representatives of the country in the meetings at Sri Lanka for SAARC countries on corals during 2011, CITES meeting for Sharks and Rays in Sri Lanka during 2013, CoP 13 meeting in 2017 at Cancun, Mexico, Recently served as co-convener for organizing the National Conference on Invasive Alien Species in India during 14th to 15th December 2017 at Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata. Besides served as a convener for organizing the national conferences on lesser known marine animals, mainstreaming marine biodiversity, faunal diversity in coral reef ecosystem in the years 2013, 2016 and 2017 respectively.
