Dear IPBES members and observer States,

The ninth session of the IPBES Plenary (IPBES 9) will be held from 3 to 9 July 2022 in Bonn, Germany (see notification EM/2021/24).

Considering the positive experience with the preparatory process for IPBES 8, the IPBES Bureau decided to conduct a preparatory process for IPBES 9, as previously announced in notification EM/2021/36.

As part of this process, Members and observer States are invited to submit final written comments on some of the working documents ahead of IPBES 9 to allow the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, Bureau and assessment experts to prepare for the session. Further information on this review was made available in notification EM/2022/13

I have the pleasure to invite you to an informal preparatory meeting, to be held online on 23–27 May 2022, which is intended to allow members and observer states to exchange views and informally consider the summaries for policymakers of the assessment of the sustainable use of wild species and of the assessment on values; the scoping report for the business and biodiversity assessment, task force work plans, as well as terms of reference for a midterm review of the rolling work programme up to 2030 of IPBES and engagement with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Members will be invited to identify areas where divergent views might still exist and to use the time until IPBES 9 to address these points in informal consultations. Interpretation into the 6 official UN languages will be available.

I also have the pleasure to invite members of IPBES to an informal preparatory meeting on the budget, to be held online on 31 May 2022.

National focal points are invited to register and nominate additional delegation members, by 13 May 2022, through the following steps:

  1. Register as a user of the IPBES website (https://ipbes.net/user/register) if you do not yet have an IPBES user account;
  2. Complete the registration form for the meetings https://ipbes.net/ipbes-9/informal-preparatory-meeting/registration (the form is only accessible if you are logged in as an IPBES website user).

I thank you in advance for your continued support to IPBES.

Yours sincerely,

  Dr Anne Larigauderie | Executive Secretary
  Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
