The IPBES Secretariat will convene, prior to the 4th session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-4), a two-day stakeholder meeting (Stakeholder Days), facilitated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and ICSU (International Council for Science)/Future Earth and other volunteers, from 20 to 21 February 2016 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia.

In a letter dated 13 October 2015, the Executive Secretary has invited Governments and Stakeholders to take part in an open consultative process on the draft scoping report for a global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Comments should be submitted into the dedicated template and sent back to hien.ngo@ipbes.net no later than 3 November 2015.

The Chair of IPBES on 5 October has invited all Governments and Stakeholders: 1) to make pledges for the IPBES Trust Fund ahead of the fourth Plenary (Feb 2016); and 2) to express interest in hosting the fifth session of the Plenary, scheduled for the first quarter of 2017. The registration deadline for the fourth session of the Plenary of IPBES to be held from 22-28 February 2016, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has been extended to 16 October 2015. Supported participants from developing countries are encouraged to register before this deadline to leave enough time for travel arrangements.

In addition, please note that Africa regional consultation meetings and the Stakeholder days will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st February 2016 and that the other Regional Consultations meetings will take place on Sunday 21stFebruary 2016.

The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) invites governments and prospective experts with relevant knowledge and/or experience to review and further develop the initial scoping for (a) the thematic assessment on invasive alien species and their control (Deliverable 3bii) and (b) the thematic assessment on sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity and strengthening capacities and tools (Deliverable 3biii).

The IPBES Chair launched on 20 July a call for proposals requesting technical or financial support for planning or implementing capacity-building projects, in the context of the IPBES prototype Matchmaking Facility.

Professor Sir Robert Watson, Vice Chair of IPBES (WEOG), has been awarded the 2015 Ecological Engagement Award by the British Ecological Society. Given annually, the award recognises an exceptional contribution to facilitating the use and understanding of ecology. Bob is Director of Strategic Development at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at UEA, and a visiting professor at the Monash Sustainability Institute at Monash University.

The IPBES Conceptual Framework has just been published in two articles: A short article in Plos Biology provides an overview and showcases the Conceptual Framework's importance for IPBES and the wider community, while an extended article in Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability contains the Conceptual Framework in full detail, with background and examples.

The work of IPBES is guided by a set of principles and procedures for all the main activities of the organization. As demonstrated in this short note prepared by the IPBES secretariat, the Platform ensures credibility, relevance, legitimacy and transparency through its rules of procedure and processes approved by its Plenary. The Platform's processes and procedures will be reviewed and updated by its Plenary to ensure that they remain relevant, strong and transparent.
