Bonn (IPBES Media) – In 2005, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) changed the way we look at our world. The IPBES Global Assessment, to be finalized in early 2019, is the scientific successor to the MA. Its findings will be the basis for national and international decision-making by Governments, the private sector and civil society over the next decade and beyond – providing the science to underpin success of the new Sustainable Development Goals.

Bonn (IPBES Media) – Pollination and the protection of pollinators are among the key issues of focus at the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP13), currently underway in Cancun, Mexico – with a draft decision expected to be negotiated by the COP today, building on the recent publication of the Assessment on Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production, by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, IPES (www.ipbes.net).

The scoping report for a possible future assessment of the sustainable use of biodiversity by IPBES is open for review from 5 September 2016 until 2 October 2016. The document will then be revised by the experts and submitted for consideration by IPBES-5 in March 2016. Letter of invitation and template for response are here.

In a letter dated 13 October 2015, the Executive Secretary has invited Governments and Stakeholders to take part in an open consultative process on the draft scoping report for a global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The registration deadline for the fourth session of the Plenary of IPBES to be held from 22-28 February 2016, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has been extended to 16 October 2015. Supported participants from developing countries are encouraged to register before this deadline to leave enough time for travel arrangements.

In addition, please note that Africa regional consultation meetings and the Stakeholder days will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st February 2016 and that the other Regional Consultations meetings will take place on Sunday 21stFebruary 2016.

The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) invites governments and prospective experts with relevant knowledge and/or experience to review and further develop the initial scoping for (a) the thematic assessment on invasive alien species and their control (Deliverable 3bii) and (b) the thematic assessment on sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity and strengthening capacities and tools (Deliverable 3biii).

The IPBES Chair launched on 20 July a call for proposals requesting technical or financial support for planning or implementing capacity-building projects, in the context of the IPBES prototype Matchmaking Facility.
