MOROCCO | http://www.atomm.ma | 7th mediterranean conference on marine turtles | Activity or event (e.g., meeting, workshop, webinar, conference, article, website) | Data management and knowledge generation | Message from the President Dear friends and colleagues, It is my great pleasure and honour to invite you to our 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles, scheduled for 18 - 21 October 2022, which is being organized by the University of Abdelmalek Essaadi, Faculty of Sciences_Tetouan and ATOMM. The Conference will take place in Morocco, in the city of Tetouan on the coast of the Western Mediterranean, one of the most important feeding and migratory habitats for Mediterranean sea turtles. The city of Tetouan is one of Morocco's most famous tourist destinations with a diverse historical and cultural heritage. Tetouan is considered "the most Andalusian city in Morocco”. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the area contains beautiful landscapes and historical monuments. The logo of the 7th conference with the map of the Mediterranean Sea symbolizes the common history of peoples and our contemporary efforts aimed at the conservation of sea turtles and the marine environment. Since the beginning, in 2001, our Mediterranean conferences have been supported by the UNEP MAP-RAC/SPA, Bern Convention, the Convention for Migratory Species, and now by US Fish and Wildlife Service. Their support will help us bring invited speakers, and provide travel and accommodation grants in order to make this conference available to as many of our colleagues as possible. We will invite prominent colleagues working in the field of sea turtle conservation to discuss collaborative opportunities. This is why the theme of the 7th Conference is “Sea Turtles Conservation after the Pandemic”. The conference venue is the Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach And Spa (https://www.sofitel-tamudabay.com), located 15 minutes away in Tetouan. The Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach And Spa chain of hotels and resorts has a history of supporting environmental and conservation projects. They have offered us a good deal for congress facilities and accommodation for participants. There are several international airports nearby (Tangier and Tetouan Airports) and Taxi shuttles service from Tangier (1 hour) and Tetouan (15 minutes) to the Hotel. I invite you all – students, professionals, and all who care about sea turtles and the future of the Mediterranean– to register and come to Tetouan for the 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles. My team and I will do our best to make this Conference a memorable scientific, professional, and social event – the reunion of old friends with the new generation of sea turtle researchers and conservationists. Looking forward to seeing you all in Tetouan! On behalf of the Conference Organizing and Program Committees, Mustapha Aksissou President of the 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles |

United Kingdom | www.pml.ac.uk | @PlymouthMarine | UN Climate Change meeting COP26 side event: 'Nature-Climate-People: tales from across the ocean' | Activity or event (e.g., meeting, workshop, webinar, conference, article, website) | IPBES assessments | Uptake and use of approved IPBES assessments | This side event at the UN Climate Change meeting COP26 showcased the Nature-Climate-People nexus and how tales from these ocean partners underline the importance of the ocean and its biodiversity to societies across the world and the urgency and ambition required to limiting warming to 1.5 °C, enhance NDCs to help achieve Net Zero with no overshoot and make ocean ecosystems part of the solution. The ocean is undergoing rapid change due to increasing CO2 emissions resulting in serious risks to its biodiversity and ecosystems, and global society. This will continue unless unprecedented action is taken. Panelists summarized the findings of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and IPBES assessments and new societal and scientific initiatives for sustaining this unique habitat and Earth’s essential life support system. The event aimed to inspire more Parties and non-Parties to enable future ocean-related climate and biodiversity action within their NDCs, to accelerate multi-stakeholder collaboration, to contribute to objectives of achieving Net Zero in a sustainable way and making (ocean) nature part of the solution, ensuring all hands on deck for “the NDCs we want”. Moderator: Carol Turley OBE, Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Panel: Sir Robert Watson, Former chair of the IPBES and lead author of UN report 'Making Peace with Nature'; Hans Otto Pörtner, Co-chair IPCC WGII & Alfred Wegener Institute; Dalee Sambo Dorough, International Chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council; Martin Sommerkorn, WWF Arctic Programme & IPCC; and Steve Widdicombe, Director of Science Plymouth Marine Laboratory & Co-Chair Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network. |

Pakistan | https://www.gcspakistan.com | https://twitter.com/gcs_zarar | BESG Sustainability Reporting | Support to national or (sub)regional platforms or networks engaging in IPBES | Policy instruments, policy support tools and methodologies | BESG stands for "Biodiversity and Ecosystems Social Governance" which is a scoring mechanism for sustainable blue economies, applicable to Government policies, Corporate sector governance and projects. An organization/Project or governance infrastructure scoring more than 80% or working to achieve this target can be considered sustainable and other matter of financing instruments and green technologies development are automatically inculcated in it. Therefore,, I suggest to all stakeholder of IPBES to incorporate this tool in all matters of capacity-building processes to achieve the goals of SDG 14 and also make it part of the political declaration of UNOC 2022 to further its implementation through UNCLOS and ISA. It is a great concept to adopt and I hope most of the nations would support it because its implementation gives a win win situation for every one and nothing to loose with respect to Climate Change and environmental impacts. I am ready to contribute knowledge in this matter, if stakeholders are interested to further its applications and in my opinion it should be taken up before the UNOC 2022, so that some consensus among the stakeholders should be developed before this event for its approval. |

An exploratory study will be carried out through interviews with key actors (academics, members of civil society organizations, federal government officials, municipal government officials, teachers, agricultural producers and inhabitants) and surveys of middle school students (high schools and high schools) for: 1) Carry out a general survey of the current situation at the level of water security (access to drinking water in adequate quantity and quality to cover their consumption, sanitation, hygiene and health needs). 2) Carry out a general survey regarding the state of the ecosystems and their capacity to continue providing hydrological ecosystem services, on which both people and biodiversity depend. 3) Know if the organizational, management, infrastructure and knowledge resources available to the population allow it to be resilient or adapt to extreme hydrometeorological phenomena derived from Climate Change, such as drought. 4) Know the visions of the future of adults and young people regarding the ideal of community development. The results of the research will make it possible to assess current opportunities, gaps and challenges. What will allow the design of a relevant and culturally appropriate knowledge management strategy, and that facilitates the creation of capacities to increase community resilience and adaptation to Climate Change. |

Uganda | https//www.oosrc.org | https://www.linkedin.com/company/74983584/admin/ | Enhancing the knowledge and skills of local and indigenous communities in Uganda to enable and facilitate engagement in the use of IPBES products | Larger capacity-building projects or initiatives, Support to communities of practice engaging in IPBES | Indigenous and local knowledge systems, Policy instruments, policy support tools and methodologies | Enhancing the knowledge and skills of local and indigenous communities in Uganda shall enable and facilitate engagement in the use of IPBES products. Familiarization of IPBES works to reach a wider community requires strategic support to increase the resilience to harness community-based conservation efforts. This initiative will enhance individual and community capacities for supporting the development and use of IPBES deliverables because Uganda is one country that is lagging behind in the dissemination of the IPBES works and we want to believe that to strengthen the role of local and indigenous communities in the implementation of IPBES works especially building and supporting their practice in conservation is essential when we work closely with local and indigenous communities, governments and non-state actors to create and improve the chances of tilting the balance in negotiations in favor of biodiversity. The contribution is in line with the IPBES 2030 work programme which includes building capacity as one of its six objectives and particularly it shall build the capacity and strengthen the knowledge foundations of the Karamojong indigenous Nomadic Pastoralist of North East Uganda and Iteso local community and it’s seen as supporting the policy. The two communities are chosen because they are situated amid areas of high biodiversity and other values of nature in the country. We aim to build the capacities of the target communities to make known the IPBES works and reports on biodiversity and ecosystem services. These products when understood by the target communities shall make good country’s dual goal of improving the management of natural resources and people’s quality of life and aimed to conserve wildlands and their biodiversity while simultaneously balancing the needs of local people, sustaining ecosystem dynamics and resilience, and ensuring continuity for future generations. This contribution undertakes community engagement of IPBES reports using bottom-up empowerment and it is justified that working to engage communities to understand assessment/research reports is considered a practical and pragmatic way of improving the delivery of outcomes and making interventions more cost-effective. |

United Kingdom | https://www.port.ac.uk/research/research-centres-and-groups/centre-for-blue-governance | Training Course on Blue Economy valuation toolkit | Learning material (e.g., video, presentation, booklet, article and website) | Policy instruments, policy support tools and methodologies | The lack of knowledge of blue resources at stake is a major gap hindering the sustainable harnessing of Blue Economy resources, policy development and implementation on the Blue Economy. As an example, more than 80 per cent of the oceans remain completely unmapped. This is combined with an equally poor mapping of freshwater and groundwater resources on the continent. To address this, ECA has embarked on the development of a Blue Economy valuation toolkit aimed to guide data collection and analysis for the socio-economic assessment of blue resources, including goods and services generated; which in turn is expected to provide an accurate snapshot of the potential of the Blue Economy and to help inform decision-making. In addition, there is still lack of clear understanding of the concept and multisectoral approach of the Blue Economy by policy makers and stakeholders. ECA has played an instrumental role in the past few years in assisting member States and regional bodies in developing their first strategic policy frameworks using the methodology provided by the Blue Economy Policy Handbook for Africa (ECA flagship publication). Countries such as Seychelles have decided to fully focus on the Blue Economy to sustain their post-Covid19 recovery. Indeed, due to the vastness of its opportunities the Blue Economy repre- sents more and more a very promising outlet to build economies back better, for sustainable growth within the context of the socio-economic crisis generated by the Covid 19 pandemic. Hence, there is need to build and develop capacities on the Blue Economy concept, approach, related policy and valuation tools to raise awareness, disseminate knowledge and enable key players to apply it through tailor-made assessments as well as policy and regulatory frameworks and action plans. IDEP in partnership with the Centre for Blue Governance, University of Portsmouth, conside- ring its importance has decided to organize a second edition accommodating the participation of a Portuguese audience. This training falls under Cluster 4 (Integrated Natural Resource Management) of the training cata- logue adopted by the Technical Advisory Committee of UNIDEP and endorsed by its governing council. |

There is the general move, especially in Africa to increase the amount of inorganic fertilizer applications to boost crop production. Juxtaposing the shallow soil depth and rate of increase of fertilizer applications, especially the nitrogen-based fertilizers, it is imperative to speak about the consequence of contamination of surface and ground water by runoff and leaching of these inorganic fertilizers. The devastations of nitrogen polluted water bodies are evident all over the world. It is therefore important to discuss the measures to subvert this devastation. | Sat, 01/01/2022 - 00:00 | Sun, 01/01/2023 - 00:00 | 76,788.27 | African States | Benin, Ghana, Malí | Objective 2(a): Enhanced learning and engagement, Objective 2(b): Facilitated access to expertise and information, Objective 2(c): Strengthened national and regional capacities | Organization of science-policy dialogues with national focal points | Convening of regular meetings of the IPBES capacity-building forum | Encouragement of the development of science-policy platforms, networks and assessments for biodiversity and ecosystem services at the national and (sub)regional levels | |||||
