Country(ies) several; coordination based in Germany but will be virtuell; capacity-building activties (e.g. Summer School) to be held internationally
Abstract BSPIN is an international network of early career scientists (ECS) interested in biodiversity science-policy interfaces. Founded in 2014 it currently has  80 members comprising both natural and social scientists. The primary objectives of BSPIN are linking ECS as stakeholders in IPBES, improve ECS’ capacities to and encourage them to engage in IPBES, and communicate the potential of ECS regarding IPBES. BSPIN, thus, relates directly to the priority capacity-building needs of IPBES as identified in IPBES/3/3.

Project Description Based on the findings of previous meetings, there is a great need to train young scientists to take part in international science-policy interfaces, particularly IPBES. Thus, we would like to organise an international summer school were we could educate us mutually and with support of international fellows welll-experienced in the IPBES and related processes. The participants of the summer school subsequently will act as multipliers of the knowledge gained and transfer it into their home institutions and networks. In doing so, knowledge and skills will be spread among the emerging generation of scientists and other knowledge holders.
Project Objectives and expected Achievables Objectives: i) Link ECS in biodiversity-science policy interfaces/IPBES, ii) train ECS in how IPBES works and how to engage, iii) trigger in-depth discussions on how to improve science-policy interfaces on national and regional level and how to make one's research meaningful for decision making.

Evaluation: The summer school offers great opportunities to learn about the issue and receive training. The output could be a joint publication of the participants on the motivation of and means for ECS to engage in IPBES, as well as follow-up events organised by participants in their region/home country.

Timeline: We would like to organise the summer school for 2016 or 2017.
