Dear friends and colleagues,
It is my great pleasure and honour to invite you to our 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles, scheduled for 18 - 21 October 2022, which is being organized by the University of Abdelmalek Essaadi, Faculty of Sciences_Tetouan and ATOMM. The Conference will take place in Morocco, in the city of Tetouan on the coast of the Western Mediterranean, one of the most important feeding and migratory habitats for Mediterranean sea turtles.
The city of Tetouan is one of Morocco's most famous tourist destinations with a diverse historical and cultural heritage. Tetouan is considered "the most Andalusian city in Morocco”. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the area contains beautiful landscapes and historical monuments. The logo of the 7th conference with the map of the Mediterranean Sea symbolizes the common history of peoples and our contemporary efforts aimed at the conservation of sea turtles and the marine environment.
Since the beginning, in 2001, our Mediterranean conferences have been supported by the UNEP MAP-RAC/SPA, Bern Convention, the Convention for Migratory Species, and now by US Fish and Wildlife Service. Their support will help us bring invited speakers, and provide travel and accommodation grants in order to make this conference available to as many of our colleagues as possible.
We will invite prominent colleagues working in the field of sea turtle conservation to discuss collaborative opportunities. This is why the theme of the 7th Conference is “Sea Turtles Conservation after the Pandemic”.
The conference venue is the Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach And Spa (https://www.sofitel-tamudabay.com), located 15 minutes away in Tetouan. The Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach And Spa chain of hotels and resorts has a history of supporting environmental and conservation projects. They have offered us a good deal for congress facilities and accommodation for participants. There are several international airports nearby (Tangier and Tetouan Airports) and Taxi shuttles service from Tangier (1 hour) and Tetouan (15 minutes) to the Hotel.
I invite you all – students, professionals, and all who care about sea turtles and the future of the Mediterranean– to register and come to Tetouan for the 7th Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles. My team and I will do our best to make this Conference a memorable scientific, professional, and social event – the reunion of old friends with the new generation of sea turtle researchers and conservationists.

This series of workshops was spread through the global time zones and hosted by regional ESP representatives, but open to anybody interested in reviewing the assessment.

We were explicitly looking for expertise from members of governments, local communities and civil society who have practical, technical and/or academic knowledge.

Each of the 5 workshops consisted of a short presentation of the values assessment and the summary for policy makers; an explanation of the review process; and an interactive part where participants were able to put forward questions and comments on the different chapters. India		 INDIA http://nirdpr.org.in/ CAPACITY BUILDING ON CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF BIODIVERSITY AT THE PANCHAYAT LEVEL Activity or event (e.g., meeting, workshop, webinar, conference, article, website), Larger capacity-building projects or initiatives IPBES assessments, Policy instruments, policy support tools and methodologies, Scenarios and models Uptake and use of approved IPBES assessments The goal of the capacity building on "sustainable use of biodiversity" is to introduce principles and governance tools to different stakeholders of biodiversity conservation at the grassroots level, particularly for those involved in rural development and Panchayati raj systems for better governance and Use of Biodiversity at Panchayat level. The capacity building programme will be imparted as Training of Trainee (ToT) mode to the panchayat level through identified agencies like state rural development institutes (SIRDs) and non-governmental institutions. The programme is designed under the larger perspective laid down by the "Convention of Biodiversity" (CBD), the "Intergovernmental platform for biodiversity and ecosystem services" (IPBES) and the governance approaches adopted in India's Biodiversity Act 2002. As envisioned at intergovernmental levels, the linkages between the 'nature's contribution to the people' (NCP) and 'good quality of life' (GQL) have been taken as a guiding principle to develop capacity building modules for this programme. The classification of different nature's contributions under material, non-material and regulative functions of biodiversity received immense attention in science policy platforms. The ToT will effectively disseminate the knowledge and skill required for improving the governance of biodiversity and ecosystem services at the grassroots level through Panchayat Raj. It will also help to impart the socio-economic and governance dimensions of biodiversity and ecosystem services to 2.6 lakhs panchayats in India .

of Blue Economy resources, policy development and implementation on the Blue Economy. As an
example, more than 80 per cent of the oceans remain completely unmapped. This is combined with
an equally poor mapping of freshwater and groundwater resources on the continent. To address
this, ECA has embarked on the development of a Blue Economy valuation toolkit aimed to guide
data collection and analysis for the socio-economic assessment of blue resources, including goods
and services generated; which in turn is expected to provide an accurate snapshot of the potential of
the Blue Economy and to help inform decision-making.
In addition, there is still lack of clear understanding of the concept and multisectoral approach of the
Blue Economy by policy makers and stakeholders. ECA has played an instrumental role in the past
few years in assisting member States and regional bodies in developing their first strategic policy
frameworks using the methodology provided by the Blue Economy Policy Handbook for Africa (ECA
flagship publication).
Countries such as Seychelles have decided to fully focus on the Blue Economy to sustain their
post-Covid19 recovery. Indeed, due to the vastness of its opportunities the Blue Economy repre- sents more and more a very promising outlet to build economies back better, for sustainable growth
within the context of the socio-economic crisis generated by the Covid 19 pandemic.
Hence, there is need to build and develop capacities on the Blue Economy concept, approach,
related policy and valuation tools to raise awareness, disseminate knowledge and enable key players
to apply it through tailor-made assessments as well as policy and regulatory frameworks and action
plans. IDEP in partnership with the Centre for Blue Governance, University of Portsmouth, conside- ring its importance has decided to organize a second edition accommodating the participation of a
Portuguese audience.
This training falls under Cluster 4 (Integrated Natural Resource Management) of the training cata- logue adopted by the Technical Advisory Committee of UNIDEP and endorsed by its governing

UNEP-WCMC delivers capacity building activities tailored to the needs of each of our partner countries and facilitates regional and global knowledge sharing. All capacity building materials developed as part of the Initiative are made freely available on the NEA Initiative website.
The capacity building activities mentioned include:
1. One-to-one country support tailored to each country partner on technical and methodological aspects of the assessment process, as well as strengthening the science-policy-practitioner dialogue.
2. Webinars, in-person and online workshops relating to specific stages of the assessment process (e.g. scoping stage, using assessment findings, roles and responsibilities) and on specific technical topics (e.g. scenarios, multiple-evidence based approach, economic valuation).
3. Guidance documents which aim to support countries to tailor the IPBES assessment process to specific national contexts, strengthen the science-policy-practitioner dialogue and enhance the use of national ecosystem assessments to support decision-making, including national level implementation of multi-lateral environmental agreements .
4. Capturing and synthesizing lessons learned on conducting sub-global ecosystem assessments, and supporting networking opportunities for practitioners involved in such assessments across the world.

The NEA Initiative will deliver further capacity building activities . This year, we have a global capacity building workshop planned and we will continue to organise webinars and develop further capacity building resources.
Our support is delivered in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) through the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net).
Financial support for the NEA Initiative is provided by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the Federal Republic of Germany. Additional support is provided by the Japan Biodiversity Fund, the Norwegian Environment Agency and SwedBio at the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
