Report of IPBES Panama meeting now available

The meeting report from the second session to determine the modalities and institutional arrangements for IPBES is now available, including in annex I the resolution to which 94 Governments consented, establishing IPBES.  Annex II to the meeting report contains the intersessional process agreed in Panama to prepare for the first plenary meeting of the Platform, which is anticipated to be held early in 2013.Report

IPBES was established by more than 90 Governments in Panama City on Saturday 21 April, after several years of international negotiations.

“Today, biodiversity won”, said the chair of the meeting, Sir Robert Watson, Chief Scientific Advisor of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs of the United Kingdom. “Biodiversity and ecosystem services are essential for human wellbeing. This platform will generate the knowledge and build the capacity to protect them for this and future generations.”

The German city of Bonn won the bid to host the secretariat of the new independent body.

Report of the Copenhagen workshop on the IPBES work programme now available

Two workshops on IPBES were held last January in Copenhagen, organised by the University of Copenhagen,  EPBRS (European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy) and the Danish Ministry of Environment. 

The report of the first workshop "EPBRS - The thematic content of the first IPBES work programme" (January 16th-18th) is now available here.

Second independant scientific workshop on assessments in IPBES

From 27 to 29 February 2012, the Ministry of Environment of Japan will hold an Informal Pre-Plenary Scientific International Workshop on Assessment and the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), co-organized with the United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP) and United Nations University International Human Dimension Programme on Global Environmental Change (UNU-IHDP).

This workshop will help develop an Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and bridge the gap between scientific dialogue and international policy.
